The presently claimed invention relates to a gear oil composition having a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥68 to ≤1000 cSt when measured in accordance with ASTM D445. The gear oil composition is useful as a lubricant in a gear box, especially in a wind turbine gear box.

A gear oil composition having a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥135 to ≤750 cSt when measured in accordance with ASTM D445, the gear oil composition comprising a) ≥20.0 wt. % to ≤94.0 wt. % of at least one alkoxylated polytetrahydrofuran of the general formula (I) having a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥700 to ≤1300 cSt, as determined in accordance with ASTM D445, wherein m is in the range of ≥1 to ≤50, m′ is in the range of ≥1 to ≤50, (m+m′) is in the range of ≥1 to ≤90 n is in the range of ≥0 to ≤75, n′ is in the range of ≥0 to ≤75, (n+n′) is in the range of ≥0 to ≤90, k is in the range of ≥2 to ≤30, R 1 denotes an unsubstituted, linear or branched, C 6 , C 7 , C 8 , C 9 , C 10 , C 11 , C 12 , C 13 , C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 17 , C 18 , C 19 , C 20 , C 21 , C 22 , C 23 , C 24 , C 25 , C 26 , C 27 or C 28 alkyl, R 2 denotes CH 2 —CH 3 , CH 3 or H, and R 3 and R 4 denote, identical or different, substituted or unsubstituted, linear or branched C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , C 4 , C 5 alkyl or H, wherein the concatenations denoted by k are distributed to form a block polymeric structure and the concatenations denoted by n, n′, m and m′ are distributed to form a block polymeric structure or a random polymeric structure; and b) ≥6.0 wt. % to ≤76.0 wt. % of at least one polyalphaolefin having a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥16 to ≤60 cSt as determined in accordance with ASTM D445; wherein the wt. % are based on the total weight of the gear oil composition. 20 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein m is in the range of ≥2 to ≤30, m′ is in the range of ≥2 to ≤30, (m+m′) is in the range of ≥4 to ≤60, n is in the range of ≥2 to ≤40, n′ is in the range of ≥2 to ≤40, (n+n′) is in the range of ≥4 to ≤80, k is in the range of ≥6 to ≤20. 21 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein k is in the range of ≥10 to ≤15, (m+m′) is in the range of ≥5 to ≤9, and (n+n′) is in the range of ≥2 to ≤6. 22 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein R 1 denotes identical, unsubstituted, linear C 6 , C 7 , C 8 , C 9 , C 10 , C 11 , C 12 , C 13 , C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 17 or C 18 alkyl. 23 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein R 2 denotes CH 2 —CH 3 or CH 3 . 24 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein R 3 and R 4 denote H. 25 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein the at least one alkoxylated polytetrahydrofuran of general formula (I) has a weight average molecular weight in the range of ≥4000 to ≤7000 g/mol as determined in accordance with DIN 55672-1. 26 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein the at least one alkoxylated polytetrahydrofuran of the general formula (I) has a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥1000 to ≤1200 cSt, as determined in accordance with ASTM D455. 27 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein the at least one polyalphaolefin has a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. in the range of ≥16 to ≤55 cSt as determined in accordance with ASTM D445. 28 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein the polyalphaolefin is selected from the group consisting of PAO 5, PAO 6 and PAO 7. 29 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , further comprising at least one additive selected from the group consisting of dispersants, metal deactivators, detergents, extreme pressure agents, anti-wear additives, antioxidants, polyesters, corrosion inhibitors, demulsifier, anti-foam additives, pour point depressants, friction modifiers and mixtures thereof. 30 . The gear oil composition according to claim 29 , wherein the at least one additive is present in an amount of ≥0.5 wt. % to ≤6.0 wt. %, based on the total weight of the gear oil composition. 31 . The gear oil composition according to claim 29 , wherein the polyesters are selected from the group consisting of methyl oleate; ester obtainable by reacting trimethylol propane and adipic acid; ester obtainable by reacting trimethylol propane and C 8 -C 10 monocarboxylic acid; di-(2-propylheptyl)-adipate, di-isodecyl adipate, diisotridecyl adipate and diisononyladipate. 32 . The gear oil composition according to claim 31 , wherein the polyesters are present in an amount in the range of ≥0.05 wt. % to ≤0.25 wt. %, based on the total weight of the gear oil composition. 33 . The gear oil composition according to claim 19 , wherein the gear oil composition passes the FAG FE8 bearing test in accordance with DIN 51819-3. 34 . A gear box comprising a gear oil composition according to claim 19 . 35 . A method for operating a gear box, the method comprising (a) contacting the gear oil composition according to claim 19 with a set of gears in the gear box; and (b) operating the gear box. 36 . Use of the gear oil composition according to claim 19 as a lubricant in a gear box.
