Compositions and methods for controlling pests are provided. The methods involve transforming organisms with a nucleic acid sequence encoding an insecticidal protein. In particular, the nucleic acid sequences are useful for preparing plants and microorganisms that possess insecticidal activity. Thus, transformed bacteria, plants, plant cells, plant tissues and seeds are provided. Compositions are insecticidal nucleic acids and proteins of bacterial species. The sequences find use in the construction of expression vectors for subsequent transformation into organisms of interest including plants, as probes for the isolation of other homologous (or partially homologous) genes. The pesticidal proteins find use in controlling, inhibiting growth or killing Lepidopteran, Coleopteran, Dipteran, fungal, Hemipteran and nematode pest populations and for producing compositions with insecticidal activity.

A recombinant polynucleotide comprising a polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide having at least 80% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence of any one of SEQ ID NOs: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 518-607, 716, 728-737, 754, 755, 756, 757, 758, 759, 760, 761, 762, 763, 764, 765, 766, 767, 768, or 769. 35 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide has at least one amino acid substitution, deletion, insertion and/or addition at the N-terminus or C-terminus compared to of any one of SEQ ID NOs: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 518-607, 716, 728-737, 754, 755, 756, 757, 758, 759, 760, 761, 762, 763, 764, 765, 766, 767, 768, or 769. 36 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide is non-naturally occurring amino acid sequence. 37 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide has insecticidal activity against Corn Earworm ( Helicoverpa zea ). 38 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide specifically binds to a brush border membrane vesicle isolated from a Lepidoptera. 39 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide disrupts the ionic balance across a brush border membrane vesicle isolated from a Lepidoptera. 40 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polypeptide is derived from a species of fern or primitive plant. 41 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 40 , wherein the fern is in the Genus selected from Lygodium, Adiantaceae , and Polypodium. 42 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 34 , wherein the polynucleotide is a non-genomic polynucleotide. 43 . The recombinant polynucleotide of claim 42 , wherein the polynucleotide is a cDNA, a synthetic polynucleotide, or has codons optimized for expression in an agriculturally important crop. 44 . A transgenic plant comprising the polynucleotide of claim 34 . 45 . A DNA construct comprising the polynucleotide of claim 34 operably linked to a heterologous regulatory element. 46 . The method of claim 50 , wherein the insect or insect population is resistant to at least one Bt-derived toxin.
