An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the filter media pack comprises alternating fluted media and facing media. 33 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 32 wherein: (a) the alternating fluted media and facing media are secured to each other at one end of the first flow face and the second flow faces. 34 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 32 wherein: (a) the alternating fluted media and facing media comprises a stack of alternating strips of a fluted media sheet secured to a facing media sheet. 35 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the housing seal arrangement further comprises a receiving trough positioned inwardly from the seal surface that forms an axially directed seal, in use. 36 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the opposite edges of the first and second side pieces include portions constructed to not engage an air cleaner housing, in use. 37 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the seal member extends across the first pair of first and second sides of the filter media pack and across the second pair of the first and second sides of the filter media pack. 38 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 37 wherein: (a) the air cleaner housing engagement surfaces extend at an angle of at least 2 degrees to the seal surface of the seal member at a location along the seal member extending across the first and second side pieces. 39 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 37 wherein: (a) the air cleaner housing engagement surfaces extend at an angle of at least 2 degrees to 45 degrees to the seal surface of the seal member at a location along the seal member extending across the first and second side pieces. 40 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) a portion of the seal surface of the seal member extends parallel to the filter media pack first flow face. 41 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) a portion of the seal surface of the seal member extends at an angle of at least 2 degrees to a plane perpendicular to the central flow axis. 42 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the axial abutment surfaces are located beyond the first flow face and facing in a direction away from the filter media pack. 43 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the axial abutment surfaces are located beyond the second flow face in a direction away from the filter media pack. 44 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) axial abutment surfaces comprise a plurality of bumps. 45 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the axial abutment surfaces comprise a plurality of recesses. 46 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 further comprising: (a) a protective material located over the second pair of first and second sides of the filter media pack. 47 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 34 wherein: (a) the protective material is secured in place against the filter media pack by molding the first and second side pieces to the first pair of opposite sides of the filter media pack. 48 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 34 wherein: (a) the protective material comprises cardboard or plastic. 49 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) at least 30% of the second pair of first and second opposite sides of the filter media pack is uncovered. 50 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) at least 40% of the second pair of first and second opposite sides of the filter media pack is uncovered. 51 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the first and second side pieces have an as-molded density of no greater than about 30 lbs./ft. 3 . 52 . An air filter cartridge according to claim 31 wherein: (a) the first and second side pieces have a hardness, Shore A, of no greater than about 30. 53 . An air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a filter media pack comprising filter media and having a first flow face and a second, opposite, flow face; (i) the filter media pack having a rectangular cross-sectional shape in a direction perpendicular to the central flow axis; and (ii) the filter media pack comprising four sides, including a first pair of first and second opposite sides and a second pair of first and second opposite sides, extending between the first flow face and the second flow face; (b) first and second side pieces positioned, respectively, on the first pair of first and second opposite sides of the filter media pack, wherein the first and second side pieces each comprise opposite edges, wherein at least one of the opposite edges of each of the first and second side pieces comprises an axial abutment surface, wherein: (A) the axial abutment surfaces are located beyond one of the first flow face and the second flow face of the filter media pack and facing in a direction away from the filter media pack; and (B) the axial abutment surfaces are constructed to engage an air cleaner housing, in use, to support the filter cartridge when the filter cartridge is installed in the air cleaner housing; and (c) a housing seal arrangement for sealing the air filter cartridge to an air cleaner housing, in use, wherein: (i) the seal member includes a seal surface that forms an axially directed seal, in use; and (ii) the air cleaner housing engagement surfaces are non-parallel to the seal surface of the seal member.
