Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Apparatuses, systems and methods for providing improved ophthalmic lenses, particularly intraocular lenses (IOLs), include features for reducing dysphotopsia effects, such as haloes and glare, in extended range of vision lenses. Exemplary ophthalmic lenses can include an optic including a first surface and a second surface each disposed about an optical axis and extending radially outward from the optical axis to an outer periphery of the optic. A diffractive profile including a plurality of echelettes is disposed on the first surface such that no echelette on the first surface repeats between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . An ophthalmic lens comprising: an optic including a first surface and a second surface each disposed about an optical axis and extending radially outward from the optical axis to an outer periphery of the optic, the first surface facing opposite the second surface; and a diffractive profile including a plurality of echelettes and disposed on the first surface such that no echelette on the first surface repeats between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic. 2 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of echelettes has a step height of zero. 3 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , wherein at least three of the plurality of echelettes have a step height of zero. 4 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least five echelettes. 5 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least twelve echelettes. 6 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least thirty echelettes. 7 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 1 , further comprising a diffractive profile disposed on the second surface and including at least one echelette that repeats on the second surface. 8 . An ophthalmic lens comprising: an optic including a first surface and a second surface each disposed about an optical axis and extending radially outward from the optical axis to an outer periphery of the optic, the first surface facing opposite the second surface; and a diffractive profile including a plurality of echelettes and disposed on the first surface such that each echelette on the first surface between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic has a profile in r-squared space that is different than a profile in r-squared space of any other echelette on the first surface between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic. 9 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the plurality of echelettes has a step height of zero. 10 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 8 , wherein at least three of the plurality of echelettes have a step height of zero. 11 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least five echelettes. 12 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least twelve echelettes. 13 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least thirty echelettes. 14 . An ophthalmic lens comprising: a first surface and a second surface disposed about an optical axis and facing opposite each other; and a diffractive profile disposed on the first surface and including a plurality of echelettes, wherein: at least one of the plurality of echelettes is connected to an adjacent echelette by a step height of zero. 15 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 14 , wherein at least three of the plurality of echelettes are connected to an adjacent echelette by a step height of zero. 16 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 14 , wherein at least six of the plurality of echelettes are connected to an adjacent echelette by a step height of zero. 17 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 14 , wherein the ophthalmic lens includes an optic that includes the first surface and the second surface, each of the first surface and the second surface extending radially outward from the optical axis to an outer periphery of the optic, and the at least one of the plurality of echelettes does not repeat on the first surface between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic. 18 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 17 , wherein the adjacent echelette does not repeat on the first surface between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic. 19 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 18 , wherein each of the plurality of echelettes does not repeat on the first surface between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic. 20 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least thirty echelettes. 21 . An ophthalmic lens comprising: an optic including a first surface and a second surface each disposed about an optical axis and extending radially outward from the optical axis to an outer periphery of the optic, the first surface facing opposite the second surface and including a radially extending zone positioned between the optical axis and the outer periphery of the optic; and a diffractive profile including a plurality of echelettes and disposed on the first surface within the radially extending zone such that no echelette repeats within the radially extending zone. 22 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 21 , wherein the radially extending zone extends radially outward from the optical axis to the outer periphery of the optic. 23 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 22 , wherein the plurality of echelettes includes at least five echelettes. 24 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 21 , wherein the radially extending zone extends radially outward from the optical axis to a radial distance of 1.5 millimeters. 25 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 24 , wherein the radially extending zone is a central zone, and the first surface includes a peripheral zone extending radially outward from the central zone; and the diffractive profile includes at least one echelette that repeats within the peripheral zone. 26 . The ophthalmic lens of claim 21 , wherein the radially extending zone extends radially outward from the optical axis to a radial distance of 2.5 millimeters. 27 . A method of designing an intraocular lens, the method comprising: defining a diffractive profile including: a plurality of echelettes and the diffractive profile disposed on an optical surface of an optic such that no echelette on the optical surface repeats between an optical axis and an outer periphery of the optic; and generating a diffractive lens surface based on the diffractive profile. 28 .
