1 . A cutting device, comprising: a housing configured to retain a blade; and a movable blade guard having a blade channel and adapted to move between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein the blade becomes exposed when the blade guard is moved to the retracted position. 2 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the blade is disposed within a blade carrier configured as a blade drawer. 3 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein a blade guard switch in mechanical communication with the blade guard is configured to control the extension and retraction of the blade guard. 4 . The cutting device of claim 3 , wherein the blade guard switch is configured to toggle between one of a first switch position, wherein the connector post blocks the movement of the blade guard, and a second switch position, wherein the connector post is moved to permit the retractive movement of the blade guard into the housing. 5 . A cutting device, comprising: a housing configured to retain a blade; a movable blade guard having a blade channel adapted to receive the blade and configured for selectively moving between one of an extended guard position, wherein an outer edge of the blade guard extends a distance past the opening at the edge of the housing to substantially cover the second end of the blade, and a retracted guard position, wherein the outer end of the blade guard is positioned relatively closer to the opening at the edge of the housing to reveal the blade; and a blade guard switch in mechanical communication with the blade guard and configured to control the extension and retraction of the blade guard. 6 . The cutting device of claim 5 , wherein the position of the blade is fixed. 7 . The cutting device of claim 5 , wherein the blade guard is configured to move independently of the blade. 8 . The cutting device of claim 7 , wherein the blade guard is configured to move around the blade. 9 . The cutting device of claim 5 , wherein a tension component is disposed within the housing and is configured to bias the blade guard towards the extended position. 10 . The cutting device of claim 5 , wherein the blade guard switch is configured to toggle between one of a first switch position, wherein the connector post blocks the movement of the blade guard, and a second switch position, wherein the connector post is moved to permit the retractive movement of the blade guard into the housing. 11 . A cutting device, comprising: a housing; a blade having a first end substantially disposed within the housing and a second end extending a distance past an opening at the edge of the housing; a movable blade guard having a blade channel adapted to receive the blade and configured for selectively moving between one of an extended guard position, wherein an outer edge of the blade guard extends a distance past the opening at the edge of the housing to substantially cover the second end of the blade, and a retracted guard position, wherein the outer end of the blade guard is positioned relatively closer to the opening at the edge of the housing; a tension component disposed within the housing and configured to bias the blade guard towards the extended guard position; a blade guard switch having a connector post in mechanical communication with the blade guard, the switch configured to toggle between one of a first switch position, wherein the connector post blocks the retractive movement of the blade guard, and a second switch position, wherein the connector post is moved to permit the retractive movement of the blade guard into the housing. 12 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the housing member is substantially round. 13 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the position of the blade is fixed. 14 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the blade guard is configured to move independently of the blade. 15 . The cutting device of claim 14 , wherein the blade guard is configured to move around the blade. 16 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the blade is disposed within a blade carrier configured as a blade drawer. 17 . The cutting device of claim 16 , wherein the blade drawer is configured to permit the selective ejection of the blade from within the housing. 18 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein applying an external force opposite in direction to and greater than the spring force exerted by the tension component on the blade guard causes the blade guard to retract into the housing to expose the blade. 19 . The cutting device of claim 18 , wherein the tension component is biased to direct the blade guard to automatically extend when the external force is removed. 20 . The cutting device of claim 19 , wherein applying the external force on the blade guard causes the blade guard to retract, but does not affect the position of the blade relative to the housing.
