Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and systems that correlate between (i) the manner in which the end-user holds and utilizes a mobile electronic device, particularly in landscape mode versus portrait mode, and (ii) the age or age-range of the user. The system detects a fraudulent transaction when the user utilizes a banking application portrait mode, while the declared age of the user indicates that he is old. Furthermore, the minimum distance between (i) the on-screen point-of-interaction of the user on the touch-screen, and (ii) a particular edge of the touch-screen, is further utilized to determine the user's age or age range.

What is claimed is: 1 . A method of authenticating a user that interacts with a computerized service via a mobile electronic device, the method comprising: (a) checking whether the mobile electronic device is operated by said user, when the user engages with a particular application, in landscape orientation or in portrait orientation; (b) if the checking of step (a) indicates that the user operates said mobile electronic device in portrait mode while engaging with said particular application, then: (b1) obtaining a verified age of said user from a pre-defined user-profile of said user; (b2) if the verified age of said user is greater than a pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said computerized service is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: determining that said user engages with a log-in screen of a particular application while the mobile electronic device is in portrait orientation; obtaining the verified age of said user from the pre-defined user-profile of said user; if the verified age of said user is greater than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that the log-in screen of said particular application is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations associated with said particular application. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: determining that said user engages with a particular application while the mobile electronic device is in portrait orientation for at least N percent of a time-length of a usage session of said user with said particular application; obtaining the verified age of said user from the pre-defined user-profile of said user; if the verified age of said user is greater than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said particular application is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations associated with said particular application. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the checking of step (a) is performed based on information sensed by one or more of: an accelerometer of the mobile electronic device, a gyroscope of the mobile electronic device, a compass unit of the mobile electronic device, a spatial orientation sensor of the mobile electronic device. 5 . The method of claim 1 , comprising: (c) if the checking of step (a) indicates that the user operates said mobile electronic device in portrait mode while engaging with said particular application, then: (c1) obtaining the verified age of said user from said pre-defined user-profile of said user; (c2) if the verified age of said user is greater than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said computerized service is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: determining that said user engages with an online banking application while the mobile electronic device is in portrait orientation; obtaining the verified age of said user from the pre-defined user-profile of said user; if the verified age of said user is smaller than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said online banking application is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations associated with said online banking application. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: determining that said user engages with a securities trading application while the mobile electronic device is in portrait orientation; obtaining the verified age of said user from the pre-defined user-profile of said user; if the verified age of said user is smaller than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said securities trading application is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations associated with said securities trading application. 8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: determining that said user engages with an electronic commerce application to perform an online purchase while the mobile electronic device is in portrait orientation; obtaining the verified age of said user from the pre-defined user-profile of said user; if the verified age of said user is smaller than said pre-defined threshold value, then: determining that said electronic commerce application is accessed fraudulently, and triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations associated with said electronic commerce application. 9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: collecting usage data from a plurality of mobile electronic devices that engage with a particular application; and determining, for each user, whether the mobile electronic device is used in portrait orientation or in landscape orientation when engaging said particular application; for each user, obtaining a corresponding user-age from a pre-defined user-profile; based on analysis of said usage data from said plurality of electronic device, determining a particular age value, wherein most of the users whose age is above said particular age value utilize the mobile electronic device in landscape orientation, and wherein most of the users whose age is equal to or smaller than said particular age value utilize the mobile electronic device in portrait orientation; utilizing said particular age value as the pre-defined threshold value in step (b2). 10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: collecting usage data from a plurality of mobile electronic devices that engage with a particular application; and determining, for each user, whether the mobile electronic device is used in portrait orientation or in landscape orientation when engaging said particular application; for each user, obtaining a user-age from a pre-defined user-profile; based on analysis of said usage data from said plurality of electronic device, determining a particular correlation between (I) an age-range of users, and (II) whether the users within said age-range utilize the mobile electronic device in portrait orientation or landscape orientation when engaging with said particular application; generating the pre-defined threshold value in step (b2), for said particular application, based on said age-range. 11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device is a smartphone; wherein the checking of step (a) is performed based on information sensed by one or more of: an accelerometer of the smartphone, a gyroscope of the smartphone, a compass unit of the smartphone, a spatial orientation sensor of the smartphone. 12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device is a tablet; wherein the checking of step (a) is performed based on information sensed by one or more of: an accelerometer of the tablet, a gyroscope of the tablet, a compass unit of the tablet, a spatial orientation sensor of the tablet. 13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein triggering one or more fraud mitigation operations comprises performing one or more of: requiring the user to authenticate via a multi-factor authentication process; requiring the user to correctly answer one or more pre-defined security questions; blocking a user-submitted transaction; freezing an account of said user; generating a possible-fraud notification and sending it to said user via an electronic messaging channel. 14 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: (A) defining a particular on-screen region, as a region of a tou
