Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving program content and data describing program content from a content source, and automatically identifying, based on user preferences of a first user, one or more relevant products or services displayed in the program content. Product-related metadata associated with the program content is identified. The product-related metadata including data relating to the one or more relevant products or services displayed in the program content. The program content is communicated to a display device for presentation to a first user in a first portion of the display device, and the product-related metadata is communicated to a second display device for presentation to a second user substantially simultaneously with the presentation of the program content in the first display device. A user commentary is received from the second device, the user commentary generated by the second user and associated with the program content or product-related metadata.

What is claimed is: 1 . A method comprising: receiving at a user device program content along with data identifying the program content from a content source; presenting the program content and the data identifying the program content to a user at the user device; displaying a user interface to the user at the user device, the user interface being configured to receive commentary from the user, the commentary relating to the program content; receiving the commentary from the user at the user interface; and linking the commentary with the program content such that the commentary is retrievable and presentable during a presentation of the program content. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the data identifying the program content includes at least one of a title of a program in the media content, a description of the program, a program genre, a program rating, an actor who appears in the program, a temporal length of the program, and a release date of the program. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user commentary includes at least one of a rating of a program in the media content, a summary of the program, a description of a program scene, and a description of a program character. 4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: accessing commentaries of other users associated with the program content; and presenting, to the user, the commentaries of the other users. 5 . The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising: receiving additional user commentary; and linking the additional user commentary with the program content. 6 . A system comprising: processors; and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor among the processors, cause the system to perform operations comprising: receiving at a user device program content along with data identifying the program content from a content source; presenting the program content and the data identifying the program content to a user at the user device; displaying a user interface to the user at the user device, the user interface being configured to receive commentary from the user, the commentary relating to the program content; receiving the commentary from the user at the user interface; and linking the commentary with the program content such that the commentary is retrievable and presentable during a presentation of the program content. 7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the data identifying the program content includes at least one of a title of a program in the media content, a description of the program, a program genre, a program rating, an actor who appears in the program, a temporal length of the program, and a release date of the program. 8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the user commentary includes at least one of a rating of a program in the media content, a summary of the program, a description of a program scene, and a description of a program character. 9 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise: accessing commentaries of other users associated with the program content; and presenting, to the user, the commentaries of the other users. 10 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise: receiving additional user commentary; and linking the additional user commentary with the program content. 11 . A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising: receiving at a user device program content along with data identifying the program content from a content source; presenting the program content and the data identifying the program content to a user at the user device; displaying a user interface to the user at the user device, the user interface being configured to receive commentary from the user, the commentary relating to the program content; receiving the commentary from the user at the user interface; and linking the commentary with the program content such that the commentary is retrievable and presentable during a presentation of the program content. 12 . The medium of claim 11 , wherein the data identifying the program content includes at least one of a title of a program in the media content, a description of the program, a program genre, a program rating, an actor who appears in the program, a temporal length of the program, and a release date of the program. 13 . The medium of claim 11 , wherein the user commentary includes at least one of a rating of a program in the media content, a summary of the program, a description of a program scene, and a description of a program character. 14 . The medium of claim 11 , further comprising: accessing commentaries of other users associated with the program content; and presenting, to the user, the commentaries of the other users. 15 . The medium of claim 11 , the method further comprising: receiving additional user commentary; and linking the additional user commentary with the program content.
