Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A barrier operator feature enhancement device is designed to provide one or more features found in modern barrier operator devices and to incorporate those features into a previously installed barrier operator system. To facilitate ease of use, the barrier operator feature enhancement device can communicate with a large variety of barrier operators. Such communication may be wireless or wired, depending on the communication protocol implemented by a particular previously installed barrier operator. To facilitate the ease of installation, the device is designed to configure itself to operate with the communication protocol of the previously installed barrier operator. Once configured to be able to communicate with the previously installed barrier operator, the feature enhancement device works with the barrier operator to provide one or more additional features to enhance the capabilities of the previously installed barrier operator.

What is claimed is: 1 . A barrier operator feature enhancement device comprising: a barrier operator communication module configured to communicate with a plurality of barrier operator types that use different communication protocols by sending communication signals by wireless or wired communication protocols; an input/output module configured to communicate with a camera and at least one peripheral device; control circuitry communicatively coupled to the barrier operator communication module and the input/output module, the control circuitry configured to cause the barrier operator communication module to communicate with any of the plurality of barrier operator types; the control circuitry configured to determine a vehicle presence based at least in part on communication with the camera; and wherein the control circuitry is further configured to effect a change in a status of the at least one peripheral device upon the determination of the vehicle presence. 2 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein effecting a change in status of the at least one peripheral device includes adjusting one or more settings of the at least one peripheral device. 3 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the control circuitry determines the vehicle presence based at least in part upon utilization of an image analysis algorithm on an image captured by the camera. 4 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the at least one peripheral device includes a thermostat, a climate control system, a lighting controller, a security system, or a combination thereof. 5 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the at least one peripheral device includes a plurality of peripheral devices; and wherein the control circuitry is configured to effect change to each of the peripheral devices of the plurality upon the determination of the vehicle presence. 6 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the input/output module is configured to communicate with a portable electronic user device via a network; and wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the input/output module to communicate a notification to the portable electronic user device in response to the determination of the vehicle presence. 7 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the camera is configured to capture an image of a garage; and wherein the vehicle presence is indicative of whether a vehicle is present in or absent from the garage. 8 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the control circuitry includes a timer to close operability that causes the barrier operator communication module to send a close command to a barrier operator upon determining that a barrier associated with the barrier operator has been open for a period of time; and wherein the control circuitry is configured to change a parameter of the timer to close operability in response to the determination of the vehicle presence. 9 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the control circuitry is configured to identify a vehicle associated with the vehicle presence determination. 10 . The barrier operator feature enhancement device of claim 1 wherein the barrier operator communication module includes a radio frequency transmitter configured to communicate wirelessly with one or more of the barrier operator types. 11 . A method for a barrier operator feature enhancement device comprising a barrier operator communication module configured to communicate with a plurality of barrier operator types that use different communication protocols by sending communication signals by wireless or wired communication protocols, an input/output module configured to communicate with a camera and at least one peripheral device, and control circuitry communicatively coupled to the barrier operator communication module and the input/output module, the method comprising: capturing an image of a garage associated with the barrier operator feature enhancement device using the camera; determining a vehicle presence based at least in part on the image of the garage; causing, via the control circuitry, the input/output module to communicate with the at least one peripheral device and effect a change in a status of the at least one peripheral device in response to a change in the vehicle presence. 12 . The method of claim 11 wherein causing the input/output module to communicate with the at least one peripheral device and effect the change in the status of the at least one peripheral device includes adjusting one or more settings of the at least one peripheral device. 13 . The method of claim 11 wherein determining the vehicle presence includes using an image analysis algorithm on the image captured by the camera. 14 . The method of claim 11 wherein the at least one peripheral device includes a thermostat, a climate control system, a lighting controller, a security system, or a combination thereof. 15 . The method of claim 11 wherein the at least one peripheral device includes a plurality of peripheral devices; and wherein causing the input/output module to communicate with the at least one peripheral device and effect the change in the status of the at least one peripheral device includes causing the input/output module to communicate with a plurality of peripheral devices to effect change to each peripheral device of the plurality of peripheral devices. 16 . The method of claim 11 further comprising: communicating, via the input/output module, a notification to a portable electronic user device in response to the change in the determination of the vehicle presence. 17 . The method of claim 11 wherein determining the vehicle presence based at least in part on the image of the garage includes the control circuitry determining the vehicle presence. 18 . The method of claim 11 further comprising the control circuitry facilitating a timer to close operability; and changing a parameter of the timer to close operability in response to the determination of the vehicle presence. 19 . The method of claim 11 further comprising identifying a vehicle associated with the vehicle presence determination. 20 . The method of claim 11 further comprising: receiving, at the input/output module, a command to open or close a movable barrier; and causing the barrier operator communication module to send a signal to a movable barrier operator associated with the movable barrier to effect opening or closing of the movable barrier.
