Various patient monitoring systems can include a sensor configured to collect three dimensional information. The systems can identify a location of a patient support surface based on the three dimensional information. The systems can set a two dimensional planar threshold based on the patient support surface. The systems can identify a patient location above the patient support surface based on the three dimensional information and compare the patient location to the two dimensional planar threshold. Exceeding the threshold can be indicative of a high risk of a patient fall. An alert can be generated based on the threshold being exceeded. The systems can repeat the identification of the patient support surface location and the setting of the threshold to account for changes in the patient area.

What is claimed is: 1 . A patient monitoring system for monitoring a patient area, the system comprising: a sensor configured to output a plurality of frames, the plurality of frames containing three dimensional pixel information of the patient area; a user interface; and control circuitry configured to: receive the three dimensional pixel information of the plurality of frames; identify a location and dimensions of a patient support surface based on the three dimensional pixel information; set a plurality of thresholds that are extended above, below, or vertically beyond given areas within the location and dimensions of the patient support surface, wherein the plurality of thresholds include a variety of fall risk levels; identify one or more patient locations based on the three dimensional pixel information; compare the one or more patient locations to the plurality of thresholds; and generate an indication with the user interface based on the one or more patient locations traversing one or more of the plurality of thresholds, the indication including a fall risk status corresponding to the one or more of the plurality of thresholds. 2 . The patient monitoring system of claim 1 further comprising the control circuitry configured to identify body parts of a patient associated with the one or more patient locations. 3 . The patient monitoring system of claim 2 further comprising the control circuitry configured to set the plurality of thresholds based on the identified body parts of the patient. 4 . The patient monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the plurality of thresholds include a first threshold corresponding to a first body part of the patient and a second threshold corresponding to a second body part of the patient. 5 . The patient monitoring system of claim 4 wherein the second threshold is associated with a greater fall risk level than that of the first threshold. 6 . The patient monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the plurality of thresholds include a first height threshold that is below a second height threshold. 7 . The patient monitoring system of claim 6 wherein the second height threshold is associated with a greater fall risk level than that of the first height threshold. 8 . The patient monitoring system of claim 1 further comprising the control circuitry configured to set the plurality of thresholds above different areas of the patient support surface. 9 . The patient monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the indication includes a change of fall risk status of a patient. 10 . The patient monitoring system of claim 9 wherein the change of fall risk status of the patient is based on the one or more patient locations traversing different ones of the plurality of thresholds over a sequence of the plurality of frames. 11 . A method for processing a chronological series of frames containing three dimensional pixel information generated by a camera to monitor a patient in a patient area by performing the following steps, each step performed at least in part by a computing system: receiving the three dimensional pixel information of the chronological series of frames; identifying a location and dimensions of a patient support surface based on the three dimensional pixel information; setting a plurality of thresholds that are extended above, below, or vertically beyond given areas within the location and dimensions of the patient support surface, wherein the plurality of thresholds include a variety of fall risk levels; identifying one or more patient locations based on the three dimensional pixel information; comparing the one or more patient locations to the plurality of thresholds; and generating an indication with the user interface based on the one or more patient locations traversing one or more of the plurality of thresholds, the indication including a fall risk status corresponding to the one or more of the plurality of thresholds. 12 . The method of claim 11 further comprising identifying body parts of a patient associated with the one or more patient locations. 13 . The method of claim 12 further comprising setting the plurality of thresholds based on the identified body parts of the patient. 14 . The method of claim 11 wherein the plurality of thresholds include a first threshold corresponding to a first body part of the patient and a second threshold corresponding to a second body part of the patient. 15 . The method of claim 14 wherein the second threshold is associated with a greater fall risk level than that of the first threshold. 16 . The method of claim 11 wherein the plurality of thresholds include a first height threshold that is below a second height threshold. 17 . The method of claim 16 wherein the second height threshold is associated with a greater fall risk level than that of the first height threshold. 18 . The method of claim 11 further comprising setting the plurality of thresholds above different areas of the patient support surface. 19 . The method of claim 11 wherein the indication includes a change of fall risk status of a patient. 20 . The method of claim 19 wherein the change of fall risk status of the patient is based on the one or more patient locations traversing different ones of the plurality of thresholds over the chronological series of frames.
