A lubricant, which includes an ionic liquid including a conjugate base and a conjugate acid including 2 or more cations in a molecule of the conjugate acid, wherein the conjugate acid includes a monovalent group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, and an acid that is a source of the conjugate base has a pKa in acetonitrile of 10 or less.

A lubricant comprising: an ionic liquid including a conjugate base and conjugate acid, wherein an acid that is the source of the conjugate base has a pKa in acetonitrile of 10 or less, and wherein the ionic liquid is represented by General Formula (4) below: where, in General Formula (4), each R is independently a group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, A − is the conjugate base, and n is 1 or greater but 20 or less. 9 . The lubricant according to claim 8 , wherein the ionic liquid is represented by General Formula (4-1) below, General Formula (4-2) below, General Formula (4-3) below, or General Formula (4-4) below: where, in General Formula (4-1), each R is independently a group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, n is 1 or greater but 20 or less, and l is 1 or greater but 12 or less, in General Formula (4-2), each R is independently a group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, and n is 1 or greater but 20 or less, in General Formula (4-3), each R is independently a group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, n is 1 or greater but 20 or less, and m is 0 or greater but 12 or less, and in General Formula (4-4), each R is independently a group including a straight-chain hydrocarbon group having 6 or more carbon atoms, and n is 1 or greater but 20 or less. 10 . A magnetic recording medium comprising: a non-magnetic support; a magnetic layer disposed on or above the non-magnetic support; and the lubricant according to claim 8 disposed on or above the magnetic layer. 11 .
