Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for reprocessing a medical device uses a medical device processor with an enclosure for holding the medical device. The enclosure also has a reservoir containing a disinfectant, a water source, and a mixing chamber that retains the medical device. The method delivers disinfectant from the reservoir to an internal channel of the medical device, and further delivers water from the water source to the mixing chamber. A flow sensor is operable to monitor the disinfectant delivered to the internal channels of the medical device.

1 . A method for reprocessing at least one medical device contained within an enclosure, the enclosure comprising a liquid distribution system in fluid communication with a mixing chamber, the method comprising: (a) activating a pump to deliver a disinfectant or detergent to an internal channel of the at least one medical device; (b) deactivating the pump and closing a valve in fluid communication with the internal channel once a time threshold is achieved; (c) releasing the disinfectant or detergent from the internal channel and into the mixing chamber when the internal channel has held the disinfectant or detergent for a minimum dwell time; (d) activating a pump to deliver water to the mixing chamber; and (e) circulating the mixture of the disinfectant or detergent and the water in the mixing chamber for a predetermined time thereby exposing an outer surface of the at least one medical device to the mixture. 2 . The method of reprocessing at least one medical device of claim 1 , further comprising heating the disinfectant or detergent with an inline heater as the disinfectant or detergent is being pumped from the first reservoir to the internal channels of the at least one medical device. 3 . The method of reprocessing at least one medical device of claim 1 , further comprising: (a) activating a second pump to deliver a diluted disinfectant or detergent to the mixing chamber; and (b) circulating the diluted disinfectant or detergent in the mixing chamber for a predetermined time thereby exposing an outer surface of the at least one medical device to the diluted disinfectant or detergent. 4 . The method of reprocessing at least one medical device of claim 1 , further comprising opening a subsequent valve in fluid communication with a subsequent internal channel of the at least one medical device and repeating steps (a) through (c). 5 . (canceled) 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the disinfectant or detergent delivered to the internal channel of the at least one medical device is concentrated. 7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the water is delivered to the mixing chamber prior to the disinfectant or detergent being released from the internal chamber and delivered to the mixing chamber such that the outer surface of the at least one medical device avoid exposure to the concentrated disinfectant or detergent. 8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring the disinfectant or detergent delivered by the pump to the at least one internal channel of the at least one medical device using a flow sensor. 9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein monitoring the disinfectant or detergent comprises calculating a volume of the disinfectant or detergent delivered to the at least one internal channel of the at least one medical device. 10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the pump delivering the disinfectant or detergent to the internal channel of the at least one medical device is cycled off once the volume of disinfectant or detergent is substantially equal to a capacity of the internal channel. 11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medical device comprises multiple internal channels, and wherein the method steps (a) through (c) are conducted for each one of the multiple internal channels. 12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure comprises a first reservoir configured to contain the disinfectant or detergent that is delivered to the internal channel of the at least one medical device. 13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the enclosure comprises a second reservoir configured to contain a diluted disinfectant or detergent. 14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the diluted disinfectant or detergent is delivered to the mixing chamber in place of the water of method step (d). 15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein delivery of the disinfectant or detergent to the internal channel of the at least one medical device occurs substantially simultaneously with the delivery of the water to the mixing chamber. 16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the disinfectant or detergent delivered to the internal channel of the at least one medical device is concentrated, and wherein delivery of the concentrated disinfectant or detergent to the internal channel of the at least one medical device occurs substantially simultaneously with the delivery of the diluted disinfectant or detergent to the mixing chamber. 17 . A method for reprocessing at least one medical device contained within an enclosure, the at least one medical device including an internal channel having a volume, the enclosure comprising a liquid distribution system in fluid communication with a mixing chamber, the method comprising: (a) activating a pump to deliver a disinfectant or detergent to an internal channel of the at least one medical device; (b) deactivating the pump once an amount of the disinfectant or detergent delivered to the internal channel substantially equals the volume of the internal channel; (c) closing a valve in fluid communication with the internal channel; (d) releasing the disinfectant or detergent from the internal channel and into the mixing chamber when the internal channel has held the disinfectant or detergent for a minimum dwell time; (f) activating a pump to deliver water to the mixing chamber; and (g) circulating a mixture of the disinfectant or detergent and the water in the mixing chamber for a predetermined time thereby exposing an outer surface of the at least one medical device to the mixture. 18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the disinfectant or detergent delivered to the internal channel is concentrated. 19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the internal channel is subjected to a first concentration of the disinfectant or detergent, and wherein the outer surface of the at least one medical device is subjected to a second concentration of the disinfectant or detergent, wherein the first concentration is greater than the second concentration. 20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein water is delivered to the mixing chamber prior to the internal channel holding the disinfectant or detergent for the minimum dwell time. 21 . A method for reprocessing a medical device contained within an enclosure, the enclosure comprising a liquid distribution system configured to deliver one or more fluids to the medical device, the method comprising: (a) activating a first pump to deliver a concentrated disinfectant or concentrated detergent from a first reservoir to an internal channel of the medical device; (b) deactivating the first pump and closing a valve in fluid communication with the internal channel once a select one of a time threshold and a volume threshold is achieved; (c) activating a select one of the first pump and a second pump to deliver a select one of water and a diluted disinfectant or diluted detergent to the enclosure where the medical device is configured to be contained such that the select one of water and a diluted disinfectant or diluted detergent is configured to contact an outer surface of the medical device; (d) releasing the concentrated disinfectant or concentrated detergent from the internal channel when the internal channel has held the concentrated disinfectant or concentrated detergent for a predefined dwell time, wherein releasing the concentrated disinfectant or concentrated detergent delivers the concentrated disinfectant or concentrated detergent to the enclosure where the medical device is configure to be contained such that concentrated dis
