Official abstract text for this publication.
A flexible composite is disclosed that includes a light-transmissive layer of an intumescent material and at least one light transmissive moisture barrier in contact with at least one surface of the layer of intumescent material, the intumescent material including an amine or amide containing compound. The composite may provide fire-resistant properties when included in flexible devices or materials requiring transparent top layers, such as electro-optic films or architectural electronic paper based products containing flammable solvents.

We claim: 1 . A composite comprising a layer of an intumescent material and at least one moisture barrier in contact with at least one surface of the layer of intumescent material, the intumescent material comprising an amine or amide containing compound. 2 . The composite of claim 1 comprising a first and a second moisture barrier, wherein the layer of intumescent is between the first and second moisture barrier. 3 . The composite of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier comprises a protective film and a layer of adhesive. 4 . The composite of claim 3 , wherein the protective film comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polycarbonate, polyimides, cyclic olefin homopolymers or copolymers, and combinations thereof. 5 . The composite of claim 3 , wherein the layer of adhesive comprises an optically clear adhesive material. 6 . The composite of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier has a WVTR less than or equal to 0.01 g/m 2 /day at 60° C. and 100% RH. 7 . The composite of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier is light-transmissive. 8 . The composite of claim 1 , wherein the layer of intumescent material is light-transmissive. 9 . The composite of claim 1 , wherein the intumescent further comprises a char-forming carbonaceous material, a dehydration catalyst, and a blowing agent. 10 . The composite of claim 9 , wherein the char-forming carbonaceous material is selected from the group consisting of polyols, polyamide-6, nanocomposites of polyamide-6 and clay, triazine derivatives, isocyanurate derivatives, ethanolamine-aminotriazine oligomers, and combinations thereof. 11 . The composite of claim 9 , wherein the dehydration catalyst is selected from the group consisting of ammonium polyphosphate, ammonium pyrophosphate, melamine phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate, melamine polyphosphate, chloroalkyl phosphates, chloroalkyl phosphonates, esters of organic phosphates or phosphonates, and combinations thereof. 12 . The composite of claim 9 , wherein the blowing agent is selected from the group consisting of melamine, triazine derivatives, and combinations thereof. 13 . The composite of claim 9 , wherein the intumescent material further comprises a binder resin. 14 . The composite of claim 13 , wherein the binder material is selected from the group consisting of melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, polyacrylates, polyurethanes, polyvinyls, EVAs, PVAc, epoxides, silicates, and combinations thereof. 15 . The composite of claim 9 , wherein the intumescent material further comprises a plasticizer. 16 . The composite of claim 15 , wherein the plasticizer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of glycerol and ethylene glycol. 17 . The composite of claim 1 further comprising a layer of electro-optic material. 18 . The composite of claim 17 , wherein the layer of intumescent material and the at least one moisture barrier are light-transmissive, and at least a portion of the layer of intumescent material is located between the at least one moisture barrier and the layer of electro-optic material. 19 . The composite of claim 17 , wherein the layer of electro-optic material comprises an encapsulated dispersion of electrophoretic particles. 20 . The composite of claim 1 in combination with a photovoltaic cell.
