Disclosed is a closure system used in combination in any of a variety of applications including clothing, for example as a footwear lacing system comprising a lace attached to a tightening mechanism. The lace extends through a series of guide members positioned along two opposing footwear closure portions. The lace and guides preferably have low friction surfaces to facilitate sliding of the lace along the guide members so that the lace evenly distributes tension across the footwear member. The tightening mechanism allows incremental adjustment of the tension of the lace. The closure system allows a user to quickly loosen the lace and inhibits unintentional and/or accidental loosing of the lace.

1 . (canceled) 2 . A reel based closure device comprising: a housing having: an interior region; an inward projecting member that divides the interior region into an upper region and a lower region; and an open bottom end; a spool insertable within the open bottom end of the housing and rotatably positioned within the lower region of the housing, the spool being configured for gathering a tension member there around; and a knob coupled with the housing and operably coupled with the spool so that a rotation of the knob relative to the housing causes the spool to rotate within the housing's interior region in a first direction to gather the tension member around the spool, the knob being further operable to allow the spool to rotate within the housing's interior region in a second direction to release the tension member from about the spool; wherein the inward projecting member is configured so that when the reel based closure device is assembled, the spool is confined to the lower region of the housing. 3 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , wherein the inward projecting member is configured to prevent the spool from being moved axially upward into the upper region of the housing. 4 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , wherein the knob is axially moveable relative to the housing to allow the spool to rotate within in the second direction within the housing's interior region. 5 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , further comprising radially extending pawls that are configured to engage with housing teeth to prevent the spool from being rotated in the second direction within the housing's interior region. 6 . The reel based closure device of claim 5 , wherein the knob is axially moveable relative to the housing to decouple the housing teeth from the radially extending pawls and thereby allow the spool to rotate in the second direction within the housing’ interior region. 7 . The reel based closure device of claim 6 , wherein the radially extending pawls are coupled with the knob. 8 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , further comprising a bottom member or plate that is attachable to the open bottom end of the housing to enclose the spool within the lower region of the housing. 9 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , further comprising an auto winding component that is configured to automatically rotate the spool in the first direction to gather the tension member around the spool. 10 . The reel based closure device of claim 2 , further comprising one or more gears that are operably coupled with the spool to facilitate in gathering the tension member around the spool. 11 . A reel based closure device comprising: a housing having an inward projecting member that divides an interior region into an upper region and a lower region; a spool positioned within the lower region of the housing, the spool being configured for gathering a tension member there around; and a knob coupled with the housing and operably coupled with the spool so that a rotation of the knob relative to the housing causes the spool to rotate in a first direction to gather the tension member around the spool wherein the inward projecting member confines the spool to the lower region of the housing. 12 . The reel based closure device of claim 11 , wherein the knob is operable to allow the spool to rotate within the housing's lower region in a second direction to release the tension member from about the spool. 13 . The reel based closure device of claim 12 , wherein the knob is axially moveable relative to the housing to allow the spool to rotate within in the second direction within the housing's interior region. 14 . The reel based closure device of claim 11 , wherein the inward projecting member is configured to prevent the spool from being moved axially upward into the upper region of the housing. 15 . The reel based closure device of claim 11 , further comprising radially extending teeth that are configured to engage with housing teeth to prevent the spool from being rotated in a second direction within the housing's interior region. 16 . The reel based closure device of claim 11 , further comprising a bottom member or plate that is attachable to a bottom end of the housing to enclose the spool within the lower region of the housing. 17 . A method of assembling a reel based closure device comprising: coupling a knob with a top end of a housing, wherein the housing includes a partition that divides an interior region of the housing into an upper region and a lower region; and inserting a spool within a bottom end of the housing so that the spool is operably coupled with the knob such that rotation of the knob causes the spool to rotate in a first direction within the interior region of the housing while rotation of the spool in a second direction is prevented; wherein the housing's partition is configured to confine the spool to the lower region of the housing so that the spool is prevented from being axially moved to the upper region of the housing. 18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling a bottom member or plate with a bottom end of the housing to enclose the spool within the lower region of the housing. 19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the knob is operable to allow the spool to rotate within the housing's lower region in the second direction. 20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the knob is axially moveable relative to the housing to allow the spool to rotate within in the second direction within the housing's interior region. 21 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the knob includes radially extending teeth that are configured to engage with housing teeth to prevent the spool from being rotated in the second direction within the housing's interior region.
