1 . An arm support for an armrest, the arm support comprising; a frame attachable to a structure of a vehicle, the frame further comprising longitudinal bars; cross bars; and connectors connecting the bars to one another at least one of the longitudinal bars being selected from a set of longitudinal bars of different length or at least one of the transverse bars being selected from a set of transverse bars of different length. 2 . The arm support according to claim 1 , further comprising: at least one insert attachable to the frame. 3 . An arm support for an armrest, the arm support comprising; a frame attachable to a structure of a vehicle and that comprises longitudinal bars; cross bars; connectors connecting the bars to one another; at least one insert is attachable in the frame, the frame; and a structure releasably engaged with a counter structure of the insert, the structure and the counter structure being interengageable in different relative positions and forming an adapter for attachment of the insert to the frame independently from the shape of the frame. 4 . The arm support according to claim 3 , wherein the structure comprises a plurality of parallel spaced vanes and the counter structure comprises at least one vane, or in that the structure comprises at least one vane and the counter structure comprises a plurality of parallel spaced vanes. 5 . The arm support according to any claim 1 , wherein the connector is provided with at least two sockets, at least one respective longitudinal bar or one cross bar being insertable into each socket. 6 . The arm support according to any claim 1 , wherein at least one connector is formed with an axle extension or with a seat for mounting an axle element. 7 . The arm support according to any claim 2 , wherein a size of the insert is constant and the insert comprises first adapter elements that can be brought into engagement with second adapter elements of the frame, and an adapter for mounting on the frame independently of the longitudinal or transverse dimensions thereof. 8 . The arm support according to any claim 1 , further comprising: a latch for locking the insert to the frame and that comprises first latch elements of the insert and second latch elements of the frame. 9 . The arm support according to any claim 2 , wherein the insert comprises at least one storage compartment that can be closed by a cover. 10 . An armrest comprising an arm support according to claim 1 . 11 . The armrest according to claim 10 , wherein the frame is pivotable on a base and comprises a device for limiting angular movement that includes first limitation elements on the frame and second limitation elements on the base. 12 . The armrest according to claim 11 , wherein one of the limitation elements is formed by a pin, and the other of the limitation elements is formed by a motion link device, movement of the pin being limited by ends of the motion link device, the motion link device comprising a motion link part on which a seat is formed for the attachment of a guide that defines the ends. 13 . The armrest according to claim 12 , wherein the guide is selectable from a set of different guides and attachable to the motion link part. 14 . An armrest for a motor vehicle, the armrest comprising: an open frame defining a rear aperture and a front aperture; a bearing assembly at a rear end of the frame for mounting the frame for pivoting about an axis on the vehicle; a first insert fittable in the frame and forming a receptacle engaging down through the rear aperture; an arm support; a pivot between the arm support and the frame for pivoting of the arm support about an axis on the frame between a closed position covering the rear aperture and closing the receptacle and an open position exposing the receptacle; and a second insert fittable into the front aperture forward of the arm support.
