A system is described for maintaining synchrony of operations among a plurality of devices that have independent clocking arrangements. The system includes a task distribution device that distributes tasks to a synchrony group comprising a plurality of devices that are to perform the tasks distributed by the task distribution device in synchrony. The task distribution device distributes each task to the members of the synchrony group over a network. Each task is associated with a time stamp that indicates a time, relative to a clock maintained by the task distribution device, at which the members of the synchrony group are to execute the task. Each member of the synchrony group periodically obtains from the task distribution device an indication of the current time indicated by its clock, determines a time differential between the task distribution device's clock and its respective clock and determines therefrom a time at which, according to its respective clock, the time stamp indicates that it is to execute the task.

What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is: 1 . A first zone player comprising: a network interface that is configured to communicatively couple the first zone player to at least one data network; a clock that is configured to provide a local clock time of the first zone player; at least one processor; tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media having instructions stored therein, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the first zone player to perform functions comprising: receiving a request to enter into a synchrony group with at least a second zone player that is communicatively coupled to the first zone player via the at least one data network, wherein the local clock time of the first zone player differs from a local clock time of the second zone player; in response to receiving the request to enter into the synchrony group, entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, wherein, in the synchrony group, the first zone player is configured to: exchange messages with the second zone player that are indicative of a common clock reference for the synchrony group; obtain audio information that is representative of given audio content to be played back by the synchrony group; generate playback timing information associated with the obtained audio information that is indicative of at least a first future time, relative to the common clock reference for the synchrony group, at which the first and second zone players are to initiate synchronous playback of the obtained audio information; transmit the obtained audio information and the playback timing information to the second zone player via the at least one data network; and engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information with the second zone player using the playback timing information and the common clock reference for the synchrony group. 2 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein the common clock reference for the synchrony group comprises the local clock time of the first zone player. 3 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request to enter into the synchrony group with at least the second zone player comprises: receiving the request to enter into the synchrony group with at least the second zone player from one or both of (a) a network device that is communicatively coupled to the first zone player via the at least one data network or (b) the second zone player. 4 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein being configured to transmit the obtained audio information and the playback timing information to the second zone player via the at least one data network comprises being configured to: transmit the playback timing information in a separate communication from the obtained audio information. 5 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein being configured to obtain the audio information that is representative of the given audio content comprises being configured to: obtain the audio information that is representative of the given audio content in response to receiving, from a network device that is communicatively coupled to the first zone player via the at least one data network, an instruction to play back the given audio content in the synchrony group. 6 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein being configured to obtain the audio information that is representative of the given audio content comprises being configured to: obtain a first portion of the audio information that is representative of the given audio content before beginning to engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information and obtain a second portion of the audio information that is representative of the given audio content after beginning to engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information. 7 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein being configured to transmit the obtained audio information to the second zone player via the at least one data network comprises being configured to: transmit a first portion of the obtained audio information to the second zone player via the at least one data network before beginning to engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information and transmit a second portion of the obtained audio information to the second zone player via the at least one data network after beginning to engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information. 8 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein being configured to transmit the obtained audio information to the second zone player via the at least one data network comprises being configured to: transmit a series of frames, wherein individual frames include one or more respective portions of the obtained audio information. 9 . The first zone player of claim 8 , wherein a first frame in the series of frames includes an indicator of the first future time. 10 . The first zone player of claim 9 , wherein the playback timing information further comprises, for individual subsequent frames in the series of frames: an indicator of a respective future time, relative to the common clock reference for the synchrony group, at which the first and second zone players are to synchronously play back the respective individual subsequent frame. 11 . The first zone player of claim 1 , wherein, in the synchrony group, the first zone player is further configured to: receive a request to adjust a volume of the synchrony group; and in response to receiving the request to adjust the volume of the synchrony group, (a) cause an adjustment of an individual volume of the first zone player and (b) transmit, to the second zone player via the at least one data network, a command to adjust an individual volume of the second zone player. 12 . Tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media comprising instructions stored therein, wherein the instructions, when executed cause a first zone player to perform a method comprising: receiving a request to enter into a synchrony group with at least a second zone player that is communicatively coupled to the first zone player via at least one data network, wherein a local clock time of a local clock of the first zone player differs from a local clock time of a local clock of the second zone player; in response to receiving the request to enter into the synchrony group, entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, wherein, in the synchrony group, the first zone player is configured to: exchange messages with the second zone player that are indicative of a common clock reference for the synchrony group; obtain audio information that is representative of given audio content to be played back by the synchrony group; generate playback timing information associated with the obtained audio information that is indicative of at least a first future time, relative to the common clock reference for the synchrony group, at which the first and second zone players are to initiate synchronous playback of the obtained audio information; transmit the obtained audio information and the playback timing information to the second zone player via the at least one data network; and engage in synchronous playback of the obtained audio information with the second zone player using the playback timing information and the common clock reference for the synchrony group. 13 .
