Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An order fulfillment system and method includes a data base that is adapted to store data defining a plurality of customer orders. Each of the customer orders is a single item order having only one particular inventory item assigned to that order or a multiple item order having multiple particular inventory items assigned to that order. An inventory area stores inventory items that are available for fulfilling customer orders, and is responsive to said data base to retrieve particular inventory items from said inventory area that are assigned to customer orders in order to fulfill those orders. A sortation system combines particular inventory items together that make up an order. The sortation system has an automated induct subsystem and a sorter. The induct subsystem receives inventory items from the inventory area and forwards, in responsive to the data base, particular inventory items assigned to multiple-items orders to the sorter to be combined together to make up the multiple-item orders, but not particular inventory items assigned to single item orders. The sorter includes a pouch sorter having individual pouches and an overhead conveyor with tracts that route individual pouches to various destinations. The induct subsystem places a particular inventory item assigned to a multiple item order in an individual pouch and doesn't place a particular inventory items assigned to a single item order in a pouch. In this manner, handling of the particular inventory items for single items orders is separate from the pouch sorter thus reducing handling of inventory items and increasing system through-put.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1 . An order fulfillment system, comprising: a data base that is adapted to store data defining a plurality of customer orders, each of the customer orders being a single item order having only one particular inventory item assigned to that order or being a multiple item order having multiple particular inventory items assigned to that order; an inventory area that is adapted to store inventory items that are available for fulfilling customer orders, and being responsive to said data base, to retrieve particular inventory items from said inventory area that are assigned to customer orders in order to fulfill those orders; a sortation system that is adapted to combine particular inventory items together that make up customer orders, said sortation system having an automated induct subsystem and a sorter; said induct subsystem adapted to receive inventory items from said inventory area and to forward, in responsive to said data base, particular inventory items assigned to multiple-items orders to said sorter to be combined together to make up the multiple-items order and not particular items assigned to single item orders; and said sorter comprising a pouch sorter having individual pouches and an overhead conveyor with tracts that route individual pouches to various destinations, wherein said induct subsystem is adapted to place a particular inventory item assigned to a multiple item order in an individual pouch and not place a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order in a pouch; wherein handling of the particular inventory items for single items orders is separate from the pouch sorter thus reducing handling of inventory items and increasing system through-put. 2 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said induct subsystem receives empty pouches and automatically opens a pouch to receive a particular inventory item assigned to a multiple item order and does not open automatically open a pouch for a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order. 3 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order is sent to packing. 4 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order drops from the induct subsystem. 5 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 4 wherein a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order drops onto a bulk-flow conveyor. 6 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 1 including a transportation system that is adapted to transport inventory items retrieved from said inventory area to said induct subsystem. 7 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 1 wherein inventory items are retrieved form said inventory area by manual picking or automated picking. 8 . An order fulfillment method, comprising: storing data defining a plurality of customer orders in a data base, each of the customer orders being a single item order having only one particular inventory item assigned to that order or being a multiple item order having multiple particular inventory items assigned to that order; storing inventory items that are available for fulfilling customer orders at an inventory area, and retrieving, in response to said data base, particular inventory items from said inventory area that are assigned to customer orders in order to fulfill those orders; combining particular inventory items together that make up customer orders with a sortation system, said sortation system having an automated induct subsystem and a sorter; receiving particular inventory items from said inventory area at said induct subsystem and forwarding, in response to said data base, particular inventory items assigned to multiple-items orders to said sorter to be combined together to make up the multiple-item orders and not particular inventory items making up individual item orders; said sorter comprising a pouch sorter having individual pouches and an overhead conveyor with tracts that route individual pouches to various destinations; and placing a particular inventory item assigned to a multiple item order in an individual pouch with said induct subsystem and not placing a particular inventory items assigned to a single item order in a pouch, wherein handling of the inventory items for single items orders is separate from the pouch sorter thus reducing handling of inventory items and increasing system through-put. 9 . The order fulfillment method as claimed in claim 8 including receiving empty pouches with said induct subsystem and automatically opening a pouch to receive a particular inventory item assigned to a multiple item order and not automatically open a pouch for a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order. 10 . The order fulfillment method as claimed in claim 8 including sending a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order to packing. 11 . The order fulfillment method as claimed in claim 8 wherein a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order drops from the induct subsystem. 12 . The order fulfillment method as claimed in claim 11 wherein a particular inventory item assigned to a single item order drops to a bulk-flow conveyor. 13 . The order fulfillment method as claimed in claim 8 including a transportation system and transporting inventory items retrieved from said inventory area for fulfilling customer orders to said induct subsystem with said transportation system. 14 . The order fulfillment system as claimed in claim 8 wherein said retrieving comprises a manual picking or an automated picking.
