What is claimed is: 1 . A method of making a primary alkaline battery comprising: preparing a cathode material by a process comprising treating LiNiO 2 with acid; incorporating the cathode material and one or more further cathode materials selected from the group consisting of acid-treated electrolytic manganese dioxide, acid-treated chemically-prepared manganese dioxide, λ-MnO 2 , layered cobalt oxide, layered manganese oxide, and combinations thereof into a cathode; incorporating the cathode into the battery; incorporating an anode into the battery; and incorporating an aqueous alkaline electrolyte into the battery. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the anode includes zinc or a zinc alloy. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the battery includes a separator between the cathode and the anode. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid is aqueous sulfuric acid. 5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid is aqueous nitric acid. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of the acid is between 1 M and 10 M. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein preparing the cathode material further comprises washing with water. 8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises Li 1−x H y NiO 2 , wherein x is greater than 0 and less than 1, and wherein y is less than or equal to x.
