Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A liquid cathode cell comprising: a calcium anode; an electrolyte comprising a sulfur and/or phosphorus oxidizing solvent and at least one salt; a cathode comprising a compound identical to the aforementioned oxidizing solvent as active material; characterized in that the cathode comprises a first zone consisting of a carbon matrix comprising entwined carbon fibers having a porosity of at least 90% and a specific surface area less than or equal to 5 m2/g, and comprising a second zone that is distinct from the first zone, wherein the second zone consists of a composite material comprising a binder and carbon black.

What is claimed is: 1 . Liquid cathode cell comprising: a calcium anode; an electrolyte comprising a sulfur and/or phosphorus oxidizing solvent and at least one salt; a cathode comprising a compound identical to the aforementioned oxidizing solvent as active material; characterized in that the cathode comprises a first zone consisting of a carbon matrix comprising entwined carbon fibers having a porosity of at least 90% and a specific surface area of less than or equal to 5 m 2 /g, and comprising a second zone distinct from the first zone, wherein the second zone consists of a composite material comprising a binder and carbon black. 2 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon matrix is composed predominantly or exclusively of entwined carbon fibers. 3 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon fibers have a length less than 20 mm and a diameter less than 15 μm. 4 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon matrix meets one or more of the following characteristics: a grammage less than or equal to 20 g/m 2 ; the matrix is in the form of a plate with a thickness of less than 1 mm, preferably less than 0.5 mm; the carbon matrix is devoid of polymeric binder. 5 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon matrix is self-supporting. 6 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon matrix is provided with one or more metal parts attached to one of the faces of the matrix by simple welding for the recovery of the current. 7 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon black is acetylene black. 8 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the binder is a polymeric binder belonging to the category of fluorinated ethylenic polymeric binders. 9 . Cell according to claim 1 wherein the second zone is deposited on a current collector, which is a strip or a metal gate. 10 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the first zone and the second zone are in contact with each other. 11 . Cell according to claim 10 , wherein, when the second zone is deposited on a current collector, the contact between the first zone and the second zone is established via the face of the collector of the current on which the second zone is deposited. 12 . Cell according to claim 10 , wherein the contact between the first zone and the second zone is established by the fact that the composite material constituting the second zone is directly deposited on a portion of the surface of the first zone. 13 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing solvent is a sulfur-containing solvent comprising one or more chlorine atoms, a non-chlorinated sulfur solvent or a phosphorus and optionally sulfur-containing solvent comprising one or more chlorine atoms. 14 . Cell according to claim 13 , wherein the sulfur-containing solvent comprising one or more chlorine atoms is selected from thionyl chloride (SOCl 2 ), sulfuryl chloride (SO 2 Cl 2 ), disulfur dichloride (S 2 Cl 2 ), and sulfur dichloride (SCl 2 ). 15 . Cell according to claim 13 , wherein the phosphorus and optionally sulfur-containing solvent comprising one or more chlorine atoms is selected from phosphoryl trichloride (POCl 3 ), thiophosphoryl trichloride (PSCl 3 ). 16 . Cell according to claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing solvent is thionyl chloride (SOCl 2 ).
