What is claimed is: 1 . A portable rechargeable lighting device, comprising: a portable housing which houses at least one rechargeable battery and a light source; an electronic circuit which provides power from the at least one rechargeable battery to the light source; a microcontroller configured within the portable housing; and a recharging device configured to charge the at least one rechargeable battery; wherein the microcontroller is programmed to turn on a charger protection circuit when a charging circuit is activated. 2 . The rechargeable lighting device of claim 1 , further comprising a battery monitoring circuit that monitors at least one electrical characteristic relative to the at least one rechargeable battery. 3 . The rechargeable lighting device of claim 2 , wherein software configured within the microcontroller is used to control at least one charging parameter of the charging circuit. 4 . The rechargeable lighting device of claim 2 , wherein the battery monitoring circuit is comprised of software programmed into the microcontroller. 5 . The rechargeable lighting device of claim 2 , further comprising communication means for communicating a low battery condition to a user before light emitted from the light source terminates. 6 . The rechargeable lighting device of claim 5 , wherein the communication means is comprised of rapidly decreasing brightness of the light source. 7 . A process for operating a portable rechargeable lighting device, comprising the steps of: using a battery monitoring circuit to monitor at least one electrical characteristic relative to the at least one rechargeable battery configured within a housing of the portable rechargeable lighting device; and using software configured within a housing of the portable rechargeable lighting device to turn on a charger protection circuit when a charging circuit is activated. 8 . The process of claim 7 , wherein the battery monitoring circuit is comprised of software executed within the housing. 9 . The process of claim 7 , comprising the additional step of alerting a user of the portable rechargeable lighting device to a low battery condition before light emitted from the light source terminates. 10 . A process for operating a portable rechargeable lighting device, comprising the steps of: using a battery monitoring circuit to monitor at least one electrical characteristic relative to the at least one rechargeable battery configured within a housing of the portable rechargeable lighting device; and using software configured within the housing to control at least one charging parameter of the charging circuit. 11 . The process of claim 10 , wherein the battery monitoring circuit is comprised of software executed within the housing. 12 . The process of claim 10 , comprising the additional step of alerting a user of the portable rechargeable lighting device to a low battery condition before light emitted from the light source terminates.
