Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system for transmitting a temperature of a patient to an electronic medical record associated with the patient includes a thermometer with a digital display that is configured to display a temperature value associated with the temperature signal and at least one error-checking value. The system also includes a handheld imaging device including a camera to capture an image of the digital display of the thermometer, a processor to extract the text in the image using optical character recognition, and perform an error-check on the temperature value using the at least one error-checking value in the image, and to transmit the patient's identification number and temperature to an electronic medical record system.

What is claimed is: 1 . A system for transmitting a temperature of a patient to an electronic medical record associated with the patient, comprising: a thermometer, including: a thermometer housing; a temperature sensor capable of capturing a temperature signal; and a digital display supported by the thermometer housing, wherein the digital display is configured to display a temperature value associated with the temperature signal and at least one error-checking value; and a handheld imaging device, including: a device housing; a camera supported by the device housing and configured to capture an image of the digital display of the thermometer, a processor, contained within the device housing, operatively coupled to the camera, and configured to extract text in the image using optical character recognition, wherein the processor is configured to perform an error-check on the temperature value using the at least one error-checking value in the image; and a network connection unit contained within the device housing and operatively coupled to the processor, wherein the network connection unit is configured to communicate with an electronic medical record system and to transmit the temperature value to the electronic medical record system. 2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the error-checking value is a checksum character. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic medical record system inputs the temperature value into the electronic medical record associated with the patient. 4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the camera of the handheld imaging device is further configured to generate a second image comprising a patient identifier. 5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the patient identifier is affixed to a patient wrist band or a patient bed. 6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the network connection unit is configured to communicate with the electronic medical record system wirelessly or using batch connectivity. 7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein error checking is performed using cyclic redundancy check-16 (CRC-16) or a Reed-Solomon error correction code. 8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the digital display is an e-ink display. 9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a guiding light emitter on the device housing, the guiding light emitter configured to emit a guiding light to help a user aim the handheld imaging device at the digital display of the thermometer. 10 . A method of sending a temperature of a patient to an electronic medical record associated with the patient, comprising: measuring the temperature of the patient using a thermometer, wherein the thermometer comprises a display and the thermometer is configured to show the temperature of the patient and at least one error-checking value; capturing an image of the display of the thermometer using a handheld image capture device; extracting text in the image using optical character recognition; checking the temperature in the extracted text using the error-checking value; and transmitting at least some of the extracted text to the electronic medical record system. 11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising: scanning an identification code of the patient using the handheld image capture device. 12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising: verifying an identity of the patient. 13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein verifying the identity of the patient comprises: obtaining biometric data of the patient, wherein the biometric data is an image of a face, an eye, or a fingerprint of the patient. 14 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising: receiving an alert notification, wherein the alert notification is textual or color-based, and wherein the handheld image capture device displays the alert notification if the temperature is above a maximum temperature threshold or below a minimum temperature threshold. 15 . A thermometer, comprising: a housing; a temperature sensor connected to the housing and capable of capturing a temperature signal; a digitizer contained within the housing and operatively coupled to the temperature sensor, wherein the digitizer is configured to receive and digitize the temperature signal; and a digital display supported by the housing, wherein the digital display is configured to display the digitized temperature signal and at least one error-checking character. 16 . The thermometer of claim 15 , wherein the error-checking character is a checksum character. 17 . The thermometer of claim 16 , wherein the digital display comprises at least two checksum characters. 18 . The thermometer of claim 15 , wherein the error-checking character is a cyclic redundancy check. 19 . The thermometer of claim 15 , wherein the error-checking character is a Reed-Solomon error correction code. 20 . The thermometer of claim 15 , wherein the display is an e-ink display.
