A barrier operator feature enhancement device is designed to provide one or more features found in modern barrier operator devices and to incorporate those features into a previously installed barrier operator system. To facilitate ease of use, the barrier operator feature enhancement device can communicate with a large variety of barrier operators. Such communication may be wireless or wired, depending on the communication protocol implemented by a particular previously installed barrier operator. To facilitate the ease of installation, the device is designed to configure itself to operate with the communication protocol of the previously installed barrier operator. Once configured to be able to communicate with the previously installed barrier operator, the feature enhancement device works with the barrier operator to provide one or more additional features to enhance the capabilities of the previously installed barrier operator.

What is claimed is: 1 . An apparatus comprising: a communication module configured to communicate with a plurality of barrier operator types that use different communication protocols, the communication module further configured to send and receive signals according to at least one of wireless and wired communication protocols; control circuitry interfaced with the communication module to communicate with any of the plurality of barrier operator types, the control circuitry configured to control the communication module to communicate with at least one pre-installed barrier operator to control operation of at least one feature of the at least one pre-installed barrier operator; and an input/output module interfaced with the control circuitry, the input/output module configured to receive a communication from at least one peripheral device, the communication including a command to effect operation of the pre-installed barrier operator; wherein the input/output module is further configured to receive a communication from an obstacle detector; wherein the control circuitry is further configured, in response to the communication from the obstacle detector, to refrain from sending a signal to effect closing the barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator despite receiving the command from the peripheral device. 2 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the control circuitry is configured to send a signal to effect opening the barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator in response to the communication from the obstacle detector. 3 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input/output module is configured to communicate with a second peripheral device that provides an indication of closing the barrier; and wherein in response to receiving the indication from the second peripheral device, the control circuitry is configured to send a signal to effect opening the barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator in response to the communication from the obstacle detector. 4 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the obstacle detector includes an optical detector. 5 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the communication from the obstacle detector indicates a detection of an obstacle. 6 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the communication from the obstacle detector indicates an inability of the obstacle detector to detect an obstacle. 7 . The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the obstacle detector comprises an optical detector, and wherein the communication from the obstacle detector indicates misalignment of the optical detector. 8 . An apparatus comprising: a barrier operator communication module configured to communicate with a plurality of barrier operator types that use different communication protocols, the communication module further configured to send and receive communication signals by wireless or wired communication protocols; control circuitry interfaced with the barrier operator communication module to communicate with any of the plurality of barrier operator types, the control circuitry configured to control the barrier operator communication module to communicate with at least one pre-installed barrier operator to effect at least one of: controlling of operation of at least one feature of the at least one pre-installed barrier operator; and monitoring of at least one aspect of the at least one pre-installed barrier operator; an input/output module operatively in communication with the control circuitry, the input/output module configured to receive communications from at least one peripheral device, the communications configured to provide at least one of: information regarding an operation status of the pre-installed barrier operator and information to effect operation of the pre-installed barrier operator; the control circuitry further configured to, in response to receiving a communication from the at least one peripheral device, effect at least one of: sending a communication to the pre-installed barrier operator to cause at least one of effecting a movement of a barrier and changing a setting of the pre-installed barrier operator, or sending a communication to the at least one peripheral device regarding the status of the pre-installed barrier operator; wherein the input/output module is configured to receive communications from an obstacle detector; and wherein the control circuitry is configured to refrain from sending a signal to effect closing a barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator in response to receiving a command to close the barrier when detecting that the obstacle detector is unable to detect an obstacle, in response to receiving an indication from the input/output module that the obstacle detector detected an obstacle, or in response to receiving an indication that the pre-installed barrier operator is opening a barrier. 9 . The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the control circuitry is configured to send a signal to effect opening a barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator in response to detecting that the obstacle detector is unable to detect an obstacle or in response to receiving indication from the input/output module that the obstacle detector detected an obstacle. 10 . The apparatus of claim 8 wherein in response to receiving an indication from the at least one peripheral device that the pre-installed barrier operator is closing a barrier, the control circuitry is configured to send a signal to effect opening the barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator when detecting that the obstacle detector is unable to detect an obstacle or in response to receiving indication from the input/output module that the obstacle detector detected an obstacle. 11 . An apparatus comprising: a wireless communication interface configured to: exchange communications including wireless local area network communications with peripheral devices including an obstacle detector, and send radio frequency communications in a plurality of formats to a pre-installed barrier operator; control circuitry configured to effect sending of communications to the pre-installed barrier operator from the wireless communication interface to effect opening and closing of the pre-installed barrier operator, the control circuitry further configured to refrain from sending a signal to effect closing the barrier by the pre-installed barrier operator upon receiving a command to close the barrier in response to detecting that the obstacle detector is unable to detect an obstacle, in response to receiving an indication that the obstacle detector detected an obstacle, or in response to receiving an indication that the pre-installed barrier operator is opening a barrier. 12 .
