Compounds, powders, and cathode active materials that can be used in lithium ion batteries are described herein. Methods of making such compounds, powders, and cathode active materials are described.

We claim: 1 . A compound represented by Formula (III): Li α Co 1−x M x Al γ O δ (III) wherein: M is Mn, 0.95≦α≦1.10, 0<x<0.50, 0≦γ≦0.05, and 1.95≦δ≦2.60. 2 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.01≦γ≦0.03. 3 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.02≦γ≦0.03. 4 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.002≦γ≦0.004. 5 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.001≦γ≦0.005. 6 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 2000 ppm. 7 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 900 ppm. 8 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 500 ppm. 9 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound has an R 3 m crystal. 10 . A compound of Formula (VII): Li α Co 1−x−y M y Mn x O δ (VII) wherein M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of B, Na, Mg, Ti, Ca, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al, Sc, Y, Ga, Zr, Ru, and Mo, 0.95≦α≦1.30, 0<x≦0.30, 0≦γ≦0.10, and 1.98≦δ≦2.04. 11 . The compound according to claim 10 , wherein 0.98≦α≦1.16 and 0<x≦0.16. 12 . The compound according to claim 11 , wherein 0≦γ≦0.05. 13 . The compound according to claim 10 , wherein the compound has a single phase. 14 . The compound according to claim 10 , wherein the compound has a trigonal R 3 m crystal structure. 15 . A compound represented by Formula (VIII): Li α Co 1−x−y Al y Mn x O δ (VIII) wherein: 0.95≦α≦1.30, 0<x≦0.30, 0≦γ≦0.10, and 1.98≦δ≦2.04. 16 . The formula of claim 15 , wherein: 0.96≦α≦1.04, and 0<x≦0.10. 17 . The formula of claim 15 , wherein: 0.98≦α≦1.01, 0.02≦x≦0.04, and 0≦γ≦0.03. 18 . The compound of claim 15 , wherein the compound has a single crystalline phase. 19 . The compound of claim 15 , wherein the compound has a trigonal R 3 m crystal structure.
