Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A viewing device is disclosed. The device includes a projector that projects a first imaged light, and a polarizing beam splitter plate that receives the projected first imaged light from the projector and reflects the received first imaged light for viewing by a viewer. The polarizing beam splitter plate also receives a second image and transmits the second image for viewing by the viewer. The polarizing beam splitter plate includes a substrate and a multilayer optical film reflective polarizer that is adhered to the substrate. The reflective polarizer substantially reflects polarized light having a first polarization state and substantially transmits polarized light having a second polarization state perpendicular to the first polarization state. The polarizing beam splitter plate includes a first outermost major surface and an opposing second outermost major surface that makes an angle of less than about 20 degrees with the first outermost major surface. The polarizing beam splitter plate reflects the received first imaged light towards the viewer with the reflected first imaged light having an effective pixel resolution of less than 12 microns.

First claim

1 . A polarizing beam splitter (PBS) comprising a multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer adhered to a first substrate, the first substrate comprising opposing major surfaces making an angle of less than about 20 degrees with each other, wherein when the PBS receives a first image, the multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer reflects the first image with the reflected first image having an effective pixel resolution of less than 12 microns. 2 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein the multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer has a surface roughness Ra of less than 45 nm. 3 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein the multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer has a surface roughness Rq of less than 80 nm. 4 . The PBS of claim 1 being flat. 5 . The PBS of claim 1 being curved. 6 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein the first substrate comprises a glass. 7 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein the first substrate comprises a polymer. 8 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein the multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer reflects at least 80% of polarized light having a first polarization state and transmits at least 80% of polarized light having a second polarization state perpendicular to the first polarization state. 9 . The PBS of claim 1 , wherein a maximum thickness of the first substrate is less than 0.1 mm. 10 . The PBS of claim 1 further comprising a second substrate, the second substrate comprising opposing major surfaces making an angle of less than about 20 degrees with each other, the multilayer polymeric optical film reflective polarizer disposed between and adhered to the first and second substrates. 11 . The PBS of claim 10 comprising opposing first and second outermost major surfaces making an angle of less than about 20 degrees with each other. 12 . A viewing device, comprising: a projector projecting a first image; and the PBS of claim 1 receiving the first image and reflecting the received first imaged light for viewing by a viewer, the reflected first imaged light having an effective pixel resolution of less than 12 microns, and the PBS receiving a second image and transmitting the second image for viewing by the viewer. 13 . The viewing device of claim 12 , wherein the second image is an ambient image.
