Official abstract text for this publication.
Personalized content is generated from different media items using a content index. The content index is generated or updated by identifying segments of media items that are of particular interest to users. User interactions with the media items are analyzed and metadata of segments of media items that are determined to be of particular interest to the users is recorded. The parameters associated with a request for personalized content for a user are matched with the recorded metadata to identify relevant media items or segments of media items which are transmitted to the user as the personalized content.

1 - 25 . (canceled) 26 . A method, comprising: communicating data, by a server to a user device, to cause the display of a personalized user interface to a user, the user device being associated with a content provider providing personalized content to the user by accessing one or more content indexes of a database, the personalized user interface comprising information associated with a plurality of entities; receiving, by the server via the personalized user interface, a user selection of one of the plurality of entities; communicating, by the server, the user selection to the content provider; receiving, by the server, based on the user selection, the personalized content from the content provider, the personalized content comprising relevant segments of media items associated with the one or more content indexes of the database; communicating, by the server, the received personalized content to the user; receiving, by the server via the personalized user interface, user interactions with the personalized content executed as the personalized content is being displayed to the user; and communicating, by the server, information regarding the user interactions to the content provider for updating metadata of the relevant segments of the media items. 27 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the personalized user interface includes information associated with the plurality of entities that the user has explicitly expressed interest or events suggested by the content provider as being of likely interest to the user. 28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the received personalized content comprises the relevant segments of the media items featuring the user selected entity having a high value of a level of interest variable which indicates that a plurality of users who viewed the media items from which the relevant segments were selected found the relevant segments of the media items most interesting. 29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the value of the level of interest variable is determined based on a number of the plurality of users associated with a selected user action. 30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the selected user action is identified by analyzing interaction data comprising user actions of the plurality of users performed on the media items. 31 . The method of claim 30 , wherein analyzing the interaction data comprising identifying various user interactions in the interaction data and comparing the number of the plurality of users executing each of the identified user interactions with a predetermined threshold. 32 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the relevant segments with the level of interest variable values indicative of high user interest are selected for inclusion into the personalized content received by the user. 33 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the personalized user interface provides a tool for tagging the media items so that the user can tag the media item. 34 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the user interactions include user actions indicative of high user interest. 35 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the user interactions include user actions such as fast forwarding or skipping to a next clip via a skip button on the personalized user interface which can indicate low user interest. 36 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the updating the metadata of the relevant segments of the media items comprises updating metadata in one or more pre-existing entries in the one or more content indexes associated with the relevant segments of the media items when it is determined that the relevant segments of the media items are associated with high user interest. 37 . The method of claim 36 , wherein the metadata in the one or more pre-existing entries comprises unique identifiers for the relevant segments of the media items, temporal metadata related to the relevant segments of the media items, entities associated with the relevant segments of the media items, total time periods of the relevant segments of the media items, levels of interest variable of the relevant segments of the media items, emotional metadata associated with the relevant segments of the media items, and importance scores of the relevant segments of the media items. 38 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the relevant segments of the media items relate to a sporting event and the metadata comprises an identity of a sport being played, an identity of the sporting event, and additional metadata generated based on the sport being played. 39 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the relevant segments of the media items relate to a news event and the metadata comprises a type of a news event, an identification of the news event, and additional metadata based on the news event. 40 . A server computing device comprising: a processor; a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for execution by the processor, the program logic comprising: data communication logic executed by the processor for communicating data, to a user device, to cause the display of a personalized user interface to a user, the user device being associated with a content provider providing personalized content to the user by accessing one or more content indexes of a database, the personalized user interface comprising information associated with a plurality of entities; selection receiving logic executed by the processor for receiving, via the personalized user interface, a user selection of one of the plurality of entities; selection communication logic executed by the processor for communicating the user selection to the content provider; content receiving logic executed by the processor for receiving, based on the user selection, the personalized content from the content provider, the personalized content comprising relevant segments of media items associated with the one or more content indexes of the database; content communication logic executed by the processor for communicating the received personalized content to the user; user interaction receiving logic executed by the processor for receiving, via the personalized user interface, user interactions with the personalized content executed as the personalized content is being displayed to the user; and interaction communication logic executed by the processor for communicating information regarding the user interactions to the content provider for updating metadata of the relevant segments of the media items. 41 . The server computing device of claim 40 , wherein the received personalized content comprises the relevant segments of the media items featuring the user selected entity having a high value of a level of interest variable which indicates that a plurality of users who viewed the media items from which the relevant segments were selected found the relevant segments of the media items most interesting. 42 . The server computing device of claim 41 , wherein the value of the level of interest variable is determined based on a number of the plurality of users associated with a selected user action. 43 . The server computing device of claim 42 , wherein the selected user action is identified by analyzing interaction data comprising user actions of the plurality of users performed on the media items. 44 . The server computing device of claim 43 , wherein analyzing the interaction data comprising identifying various user interactions in the interaction data and comparing the number of the plurality of users executing each of the iden
