Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A battery and a method of constructing a battery are disclosed in which a first conductive substrate portion has a first face and a second conductive substrate portion has a second face opposed to the first face. A first electrode material is disposed in electrical contact with the first face, an electrolyte material is disposed in contact with the first electrode material, a second electrode material is disposed in contact with the electrolyte material, and a conductive tab disposed in contact with the second electrode material. The first conductive substrate portion, the first electrode material, and the conductive tab extend outward beyond a particular edge of the second conductive substrate portion.

We claim: 1 . A battery, comprising: a first conductive substrate portion having a first face and a second conductive substrate portion having a second face opposed to the first face; a first electrode material disposed in electrical contact with the first face; an electrolyte material disposed in contact with the first electrode material; a second electrode material disposed in contact with the electrolyte material; and a conductive tab disposed in contact with the second electrode material; wherein the first conductive substrate portion, the first electrode material, and the conductive tab extend outward beyond a particular edge of the second conductive substrate portion. 2 . The battery of claim 1 , wherein the first and second conductive substrate portions are integral with one another and a fold portion is disposed therebetween. 3 . The battery of claim 2 , wherein the electrolyte material is disposed between layers of the first electrode material. 4 . The battery of claim 1 , wherein the first and second conductive substrate portions are discrete elements. 5 . The battery of claim 1 , further including an adhesive disposed between the first and second faces for securing the first face to the second face and wherein the first electrode material is disposed in electrical contact with the second face. 6 . The battery of claim 5 , wherein the electrolyte material is disposed in contact with layers of the first electrode material. 7 . The battery of claim 1 , further comprising a further insulating material disposed between the second face and the conductive tab. 8 . The battery of claim 1 , further comprising a further conductive tab coupled to one of the first and the second conductive substrates, wherein the further conductive tab extends outwardly beyond at least one of the first and the second faces. 9 . The battery of claim 8 , in combination with a non-conductive material encasing a portion of the battery except portions of the conductive tab and the further conductive tab. 10 . The battery of claim 1 , further comprising a surface of the second electrode material disposed in contact with the exposed surface of the conductive tab and the surface of the electrolyte material. 11 . A method of constructing a battery having first and second conductive substrate portions, comprising the steps of: disposing the first and second conductive substrate portions such that the first conductive substrate portion extends outwardly beyond a particular edge of the second conductive substrate portion; disposing a first electrode material in electrical contact with the first conductive substrate and such that a portion of the first electrode material extends outwardly beyond the particular edge; disposing an electrolyte material in contact with the first electrode material; disposing a second electrode material in contact with the electrolyte material; and disposing a conductive tab in contact with the second electrode material such that a portion of the conductive tab extends outwardly beyond the particular edge. 12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein an integral substrate comprises the first and second conductive substrate portions and the step of disposing the first and second conductive substrate portions comprises the step of folding the integral substrate along a fold portion. 13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of disposing the electrolyte material comprises the step of disposing the electrolyte material between layers of the first electrode material. 14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second conductive substrate portions are discrete elements. 15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second conductive substrate portions comprise first and second faces, respectively, further including the step of disposing an adhesive between the first and second faces to secure the first face to the second face. 16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of disposing the electrolyte material comprises the step of disposing the electrolyte in contact with layers of the first electrode material. 17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising the step of disposing an insulating material between the second face and the conductive tab. 18 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of disposing a further conductive tab such that the further conductive tab is coupled to one of the first and the second conductive substrates and a portion of the further conductive tab extends outwardly beyond at least one of the first and the second faces. 19 . The method of claim 18 , in combination with a non-conductive material encasing a portion of the battery except portions of the conductive tab and the further conductive tab. 20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of disposing the second electrode material includes the step of disposing the second electrode material in contact with an exposed surface of the conductive tab and a surface of the electrolyte material.
