1 . A method for treating anemia with ringed sideroblasts in a patient, the method comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the sequence of amino acids 29-109 of SEQ ID NO: 1, wherein the polypeptide comprises an acidic amino acid at the position corresponding to position 79 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 2 - 10 . (canceled) 11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 95% identical to the sequence of amino acids 29-109 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 98% identical to the sequence of amino acids 29-109 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is identical to the sequence of amino acids 29-109 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 14 - 18 . (canceled) 19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the sequence of amino acids 25-131 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 95% identical to the sequence of amino acids 25-131 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 21 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises the sequence of amino acids 25-131 of SEQ ID NO: 1. 22 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 28. 23 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 95% identical to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 28. 24 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 28. 25 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide binds to GDF11. 26 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide binds to GDF8. 27 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide binds to GDF11 and GDF8. 28 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the acidic amino acid is aspartic acid (D). 29 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the acidic amino acid is glutamic acid (E). 30 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient is refractory to erythropoietin treatment. 31 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient has elevated levels of erythropoietin. 32 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient has myelodysplastic syndrome. 33 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient has refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts. 34 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the patient has myelodysplastic syndrome. 35 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the patient has refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts. 36 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide is administered subcutaneously.
