Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure is directed toward a semi-compliant to non-compliant, conformable balloon useful in medical applications. Conformable balloons of the present disclosure exhibit a low straightening force when in a curved configuration and at inflation pressures greater than 4 atm. Balloons of the present disclosure are constructed of material that can compress along an inner length when the balloon is in a curved configuration. In further embodiments, balloons of the present disclosure can be constructed of material that sufficiently elongates along an outer arc when the balloon is in a curved configuration. As a result, medical balloons, in accordance with the present disclosure, when inflated in a curved configuration, exhibit kink-free configurations and do not cause a significant degree of vessel straightening.

What is claimed is: 1 . A medical balloon comprising: a balloon wall comprising a porous material; a nominal diameter of between about 9 mm to about 12 mm and a working pressure range that spans a nominal inflation pressure to a rated burst pressure, wherein the medical balloon exhibits less than a 3N increase in mean straightening force when inflated across the working pressure range while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 2 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the balloon exhibits a mean straightening force less than 10N at the rated burst pressure while in the curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 3 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the medical balloon remains kink-free when inflated in the curved configuration. 4 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein polymeric material comprises expanded polytretrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). 5 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the balloon exhibits a mean straightening force less than 10N at a pressure of 8 atm while in the curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 6 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the nominal inflation pressure is greater than 4 atm. 7 . The medical balloon of claim 1 , wherein the mean straightening force is determined with a 3-point bend fixture. 8 . A medical balloon comprising: a balloon wall comprising a porous material; a nominal diameter of between about 9 mm to about 12 mm and a working pressure range that spans a nominal inflation pressure to a rated burst pressure, wherein the medical balloon exhibits less than a 10N mean straightening force when inflated across the working pressure range while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 9 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the working pressure range for the medical balloon is between about 5 atm and about 8 atm. 10 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the medical balloon exhibits a mean straightening force less than 10N at the rated burst pressure while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 11 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the mean straightening force is determined with a 3-point bend fixture. 12 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the medical balloon remains kink-free when inflated in the curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 13 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the medical balloon exhibits less than an 8N mean straightening force when inflated up to a pressure of 8 atm while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 14 . The medical balloon of claim 8 , wherein the nominal inflation pressure is less than 6 atm. 15 . A medical balloon comprising: a balloon wall comprising a porous material, a nominal diameter of between about 13 mm to about 14 mm and a working pressure range that spans a nominal inflation pressure to a rated burst pressure, wherein the medical balloon exhibits less than a 12N mean straightening force when inflated across the working pressure range while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 16 . The medical balloon of claim 15 , wherein the balloon exhibits less than an 11N mean straightening force when inflated up to a pressure of 8 atm while in a curved configuration requiring 16% total strain. 17 . The medical balloon of claim 15 , wherein the medical balloon remains kink-free when inflated in the curved configuration. 18 . The medical balloon of claim 15 , wherein porous material comprises ePTFE. 19 . The medical balloon of claim 15 , wherein the nominal inflation pressure is less than 6 atm. 20 . The medical balloon of claim 15 , wherein the mean straightening force is determined with a 3-point bend fixture.
