A method by which a streaming interactive video user session is handed off from one streaming interactive video server to another without noticeable disruption to the video stream or the user interactivity.

1 . A method comprising: receiving a request by a hosting service center from a user to join a multiplayer interactive game already in progress; determining whether the user may join the multiplayer interactive game based on a set of criteria that includes a latency of a communication channel associated with the user; loading the multiplayer interactive game onto a server; instructing an inbound routing network to transfer control signals received from the user to a game server hosting the multiplayer interactive game; synchronizing compression of the video associated with the multiplayer interactive game as between the user and other players already playing the game.
