A computer implemented method for distributing, collecting and monitoring assignments by a content management system. The method includes receiving a request for a file request from a teacher to distribute an assignment to one or more students. In response to receiving the request, the teacher is prompted for information associated with the assignment. The information can include a name for the assignment, an assignment file and a collection identifier. In response to receiving the information, one or more metadata tags are generated based on the received information. The file request is distributed along with the one or more metadata tags to the one or more student.

1 . A computer implemented method comprising: receiving from a teacher, by one or more processors of a content management system, a request for a file request to disseminate an assignment to one or more students for use in collecting and monitoring assignment statuses once disseminated to the one or more students; at least partially in response to receiving the request, rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system, one or more prompts to the teacher, wherein the one or more prompts request information from the teacher including a name for the assignment, an assignment file and a collection identifier identifying a designated collection folder where one or more assignments from the one or more students will be stored or associated with; receiving, by one or more processors of the content management system, information responding to the prompts; generating, by one or more processors of the content management system, one or more metadata tags associated with the assignment using at least some of the received information, the one or more metadata tags identify at least the assignment; and distributing, by one or more processors of the content management system, the file request and the one or more metadata tags to the one or more students. 2 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 further comprising, generating, by one or more processors of the content management system, a link to the assignment using at least some of the received information and the distributing further comprising: generating an email message; and distributing the email message to the one or more students associated with the file request with the email message containing the link. 3 . The computer implemented method of claim 2 wherein the link comprises a path to store the assignments. 4 . The computer implemented method of claim 2 wherein the link encodes at least one of a template file identifier and a file identifier. 5 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the distributing further comprises associating, by one or more processors of the content management system, the file request and one or more metadata tags with a user account for each student. 6 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the one or more prompts comprise a deadline prompt and the information received includes a deadline. 7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 6 wherein the deadline includes a date deadline and a time deadline. 8 . The computer implemented method of claim 6 wherein the one or prompts comprise a late submission deadline. 9 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system on a client device associated with a student, a list of one or more outstanding assignments associated with the student based on the one or more metadata tags. 10 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: receiving, by one or more processors of the content management system, an assignment file from a student, the assignment file including one or more metadata tags identifying at least the assignment and student; authenticating, by one or more processors of the content management system, the student; and storing, by one or more processors of the content management system, the received assignment file in response to the student being authenticated. 11 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: receiving, by one or more processors of the content management system, one or more assignment files from the one or more students, each assignment file including one or more metadata tags identifying at least the assignment and student; and storing, by one or more processors of the content management system, the one or more received assignment files. 12 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 wherein each of the assignment files is a template instance file. 13 . The computer implemented method of claim 12 wherein each template instance file is a copy of a template file. 14 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 wherein each of the one or more received assignment files from one or more students is received via a user interface rendered on a client device associated with one of the one or more students. 15 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 further comprising rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system, a status of submissions from one or more students for a corresponding file request. 16 . The computer implemented method of claim 15 wherein the status indicates a number of submissions to the file request, a number of late submissions and a number of missing submission to the file request. 17 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 further comprising: rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system, a teacher user interface allowing the teacher to select one or more views, the views comprising at least one of: a view of one or more classes associated with the teacher, a view of one or more assignments associated with the teacher, a view of one or more assignments associated with a class, and a view of one or more assignments associated with a student, wherein the selected view is based on one or more metadata tags associated with the selected view. 18 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 further comprising: notifying, by one or more processors of the content management system, the teacher associated with the file request of a received assignment file. 19 . The computer implemented method of claim 11 further comprising: rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system, a received assignment file; receiving, by one or more processors of the content management system, modifications to the rendered assignment file; storing, by one or more processors of the content management system, the modifications to the rendered assignment file in a change history file; and sharing, by one or more processors of the content management system, the uploaded assignment file and the change history file with the student who uploaded the assignment file. 20 . The computer implemented method of claim 19 further comprising: rendering, by one or more processors of the content management system, the received assignment file along with the modifications on a client device associated with the student who uploaded the assignment file.
