1 - 16 . (canceled) 17 . A method for producing shikimic acid, the method comprising: obtaining an extract from oil palm based materials, wherein the extract from oil palm based materials is preferably without using solvents; and purifying shikimic acid from the oil palm based materials extracts by treating with glyphosate. 18 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein the oil palm based materials include vegetation liquors, any oil palm by products, palm oil milling wastes materials, oil palm based waste materials (liquid and solid), materials from oil palm based industries, any ancillary oil palm vegetative matters, any part of the oil palm tree for instance but not limiting to the stem, pulp, seed, trunk, fruitlet, fruitbunch, frond, any part of the oil palm fruit. 19 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein a yield of shikimic acid obtained from OPP is approximately 1% of the dry weight. 20 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein a yield of shikimic acid increases if oil palm based materials is treated with glyphosate prior to extracting. 21 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein a water-soluble, solvent-free extract of oil palm or oil palm based materials each comprising a shikimic acid is obtained, wherein the water-soluble extract comprises the shikimic acid. 22 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein said oil palm based materials is palm oil mill effluent (POME). 23 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein said oil palm based materials is palm oil vegetation liquor.
