Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An access data collector collects access assignment data characterizing active access assignment operations of a hypervisor in assigning host computing resources among virtual machines for use in execution of the virtual machines. Then, a capacity risk indicator calculator calculates a capacity risk indicator characterizing a capacity risk of the host computing resources with respect to meeting a prospective capacity demand of the virtual machines, based on the access assignment data

What is claimed is: 1 . A system including instructions stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium and executable by at least one processor, the system comprising: a data collector configured to cause the at least one processor to collect data characterizing active assignment operations of a hypervisor in assigning host computing resources among a plurality of virtual machines for use in execution of the plurality of virtual machines; and a capacity risk indicator calculator configured to cause the at least one processor to calculate a capacity risk indicator characterizing a capacity risk of the host computing resources with respect to meeting a prospective capacity demand of the plurality of virtual machines, based on the data and at least one calculated pressure index and generate a plurality of records including a summary risk indicator value for a cluster of at least some of the plurality of virtual machines. 2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the summary risk indicator value is a weighted value determined using, for each cluster of virtual machines, predictive saturation data, operating system data, and the at least one calculated pressure index. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator includes at least two pressure index calculators configured to calculate corresponding pressure indexes, and is configured to calculate the capacity risk indicator based on a weighted combination of corresponding pressure indexes. 4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to adjust at least one capacity risk indicator in response to detecting modified utilization data associated with the cluster. 5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to leverage assignment data collected by the data collector, in conjunction with one or more capacity risk indicators, the leveraging including analyzing interactions between two or more of the plurality of virtual machines. 6 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a report generator configured to generate information regarding each underlying host computing resource associated with one or more of the plurality of virtual machines, the information including component data, risk assessments or assessment reasoning associated therewith and utilized in a calculation of corresponding capacity risk indicators. 7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the information further includes a capacity status and one or more recommendations for reconfiguration, tuning, or purchase of one or more host computing resource. 8 . A method comprising: collecting, with a processor, data characterizing active assignment operations of a hypervisor in assigning host computing resources among a plurality of virtual machines for use in execution of the plurality of virtual machines; and calculating, using a capacity risk indicator calculator, a capacity risk indicator characterizing a capacity risk of the host computing resources with respect to meeting a prospective capacity demand of the plurality of virtual machines, based on the data and at least one calculated pressure index and generate a plurality of records including a summary risk indicator value for a cluster of at least some of the plurality of virtual machines. 9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the summary risk indicator value is a weighted value determined using, for each cluster of virtual machines, predictive saturation data, operating system data, and the at least one calculated pressure index. 10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator includes at least two pressure index calculators configured to calculate corresponding pressure indexes, and is configured to calculate the capacity risk indicator based on a weighted combination of corresponding pressure indexes. 11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to adjust at least one capacity risk indicator in response to detecting modified utilization data associated with the cluster. 12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to leverage assignment data, in conjunction with one or more capacity risk indicators, the leveraging including analyzing interactions between two or more of the plurality of virtual machines. 13 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising a report generator configured to generate information regarding each underlying host computing resource associated with one or more of the plurality of virtual machines, the information including component data, risk assessments or assessment reasoning associated therewith and utilized in a calculation of corresponding capacity risk indicators. 14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the information further includes a capacity status and one or more recommendations for reconfiguration, tuning, or purchase of one or more host computing resource. 15 . A computer program product including instructions recorded on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured, when executed by at least one processor, to cause the at least one processor to: collect, with a processor, data characterizing active assignment operations of a hypervisor in assigning host computing resources among a plurality of virtual machines for use in execution of the plurality of virtual machines; and calculate, using a capacity risk indicator calculator, a capacity risk indicator characterizing a capacity risk of the host computing resources with respect to meeting a prospective capacity demand of the plurality of virtual machines, based on the data and at least one calculated pressure index and generate a plurality of records including a summary risk indicator value for a cluster of at least some of the plurality of virtual machines. 16 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the summary risk indicator value is a weighted value determined using, for each cluster of virtual machines, predictive saturation data, operating system data, and the at least one calculated pressure index. 17 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator includes at least two pressure index calculators configured to calculate corresponding pressure indexes, and is configured to calculate the capacity risk indicator based on a weighted combination of corresponding pressure indexes. 18 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to adjust at least one capacity risk indicator in response to detecting modified utilization data associated with the cluster. 19 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the capacity risk indicator calculator is further operable to leverage assignment data, in conjunction with one or more capacity risk indicators, the leveraging including analyzing interactions between two or more of the plurality of virtual machines. 20 . The computer program product of claim 15 , further comprising a report generator configured to generate information regarding each underlying host computing resource associated with one or more of the plurality of virtual machines, the information including component data, risk assessments or assessment reasoning associated therewith and utilized in a calculation of corresponding capacity risk indicators.
