Methods and systems are disclosed that, in some aspects, provide an opening mechanism comprising an interior and an exterior door handle and sensors to detect movement of each door handle. A door position sensor may be provided. An alarm module for generating an alarm may be connected to at least one of the sensors. A method may include receiving a door handle actuation signal, determining whether the door handle actuation signal is from an inside door handle or an outside door handle and performing a function. One or more methods include determining an event, including an attempted entry, a forced entry and an incomplete entry.

1 . An apparatus, comprising: an interior door handle configured to open a door from an interior portion of a premise; an exterior door handle configured to open the door from an exterior portion of the premise, wherein the exterior door handle is configured to operate independently of the interior door handle; a first sensor configured to detect movement of the interior door handle; and a second sensor configured to detect movement of the exterior door handle. 2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: an alarm module configured to generate an audible alarm, connected to at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor; and an annunciating device configured to provide the audible alarm. 3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising: a visual indicator configured to indicate an alarm status. 4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the said exterior and interior door handles comprise portions that can be turned by a user's hand. 5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a door position sensor. 6 . A method comprising: receiving a door handle actuation signal; determining whether the door handle actuation signal is from a first sensor or a second sensor, the first sensor being configured to detect actuation of an inside door handle and the second sensor configured to detect actuation of an outside door handle; performing a first function, responsive to determining that the door handle actuation signal is from the first sensor; and performing a second function, responsive to determining that the door handle actuation signal is from the second sensor. 7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the performing the first function comprises: generating a first alarm for a selected period; and generating a second alarm, subsequent to expiration of the selected period. 8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the performing the second function comprises: generating an alarm. 9 . The method of claim 6 , the second function further comprising: controlling a camera to capture an image. 10 . The method of claim 6 , the second function further comprising: providing an illumination. 11 . The method of claim 6 , the second function further comprising: providing a notification via an email, a text message or other electronic message. 12 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising: providing an alarm mode; and providing a visual indicator, indicative of the alarm mode. 13 . The method of claim 6 , the first function further comprising: determining a current time of day; providing a first alarm when the current time of day is within a selected range; and providing a second alarm when the current time of day is not within the selected range. 14 . A method comprising: monitoring a first sensor, the first sensor configured to detect a position of an inside door handle; monitoring a second sensor, the second sensor configured to detect a position of an outside door handle; monitoring a door position sensor, the door position sensor configured to detect a door position; and determining, by a computing device, a door state based at least in part on the door position. 15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising: comparing the door state to one or more previous door states; and determining a door event. 16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising: determining that the door event comprises an attempted entry, when the position of the outside door handle is changed and the door position remains closed from the previous door state. 17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising: providing an illumination in response to determining that the door event comprises an attempted entry. 18 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising: controlling a camera to capture an image in response to determining that the door event comprises an attempted entry. 19 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising: determining that the door event comprises a forced entry, when the door position is changed from closed to open without change in the position of the inside door handle or the position of the outside door handle. 20 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising: determining that the door event comprises an incomplete entry, when the door position is changed from closed to open and the position of the outside door handle is changed.
