Official abstract text for this publication.
According to one aspect of the teachings disclosed herein, a Machine-to-Machine, M2M, support entity within a M2M network is configured to identify the M2M Service Provider, SP, affiliations of the M2M entities and the M2M resources involved in a given transaction supported by the M2M support entity. Moreover, the support entity is configured to generate corresponding transaction records that are tagged with or otherwise store the M2M SP affiliation information, for billing usage. Consequently, usage of the support entity by more than one M2M SP can be differentiated for billing purposes. This functionality allows, for example, a second, smaller or less financially capable M2M SP to use the M2M gateways and/or other support entities of a larger or better-established M2M SP, and, in turn, allows the larger M2M SP to increase its revenue by expanding usage of its M2M network.

1 - 25 . (canceled) 26 . A method at a Machine-to-Machine, M2M, Support Entity, SE, operating in a Machine-to-Machine, M2M, network, wherein the M2M SE supports M2M transactions involving given M2M entities and given M2M resources in the M2M network that are affiliated with different M2M Service Providers, SPs, and wherein the method comprises: identifying a transaction initiator and a transaction target, for a given transaction being supported by the M2M SE, wherein the transaction initiator comprises a given M2M entity in the M2M network that initiated the transaction and the transaction target comprises a given M2M resource in the M2M network that is targeted by the given transaction; identifying M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target; generating a transaction record for the given transaction, and including in the transaction record the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target; storing the transaction record at least temporarily in storage at the M2M SE; and forwarding the transaction record, or a Charging Data Record, CDR, derived therefrom, towards a billing system associated with the M2M network, for billing in dependence on the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target. 27 . The method of claim 26 , wherein identifying the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target is based on at least one of: information received by the M2M SE in conjunction with the given transaction, and affiliation information stored in the M2M SE in advance of the given transaction. 28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein identifying the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target comprises: receiving a M2M identifier of the transaction initiator and/or a M2M identifier of the transaction target, in M2M signaling received by the M2M SE, in conjunction with the transaction; and identifying the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target, using the affiliation information stored at the M2M SE, wherein the affiliation information maps the M2M identifiers received for the transaction initiator and the transaction target to respective M2M SP identifiers. 29 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the transaction initiator is not registered with the M2M SE, and wherein identifying the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction initiator comprises extracting an indication of the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction initiator from M2M signaling received by the M2M SE in conjunction with the transaction. 30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the M2M SE stores the transaction target ( 102 ), the transaction initiator is registered at another M2M SE in the M2M network, the transaction is a request to access the transaction target, and identifying the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction target comprises accessing the affiliation information stored at the M2M SE. 31 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the transaction target is not hosted at the M2M SE, and wherein identifying the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction target comprises extracting an indication of the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction target from M2M signaling received by the M2M SE in conjunction with the transaction. 32 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the transaction comprises a M2M request in which the transaction initiator requests access to the transaction target. 33 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the M2M SE comprises one of a Middle Node Common Services Entity, MN-CSE, and an Infrastructure Node Common Services Entity, IN-CSE. 34 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the M2M SE comprises a Middle Node Common Services Entity, MN-CSE, and wherein the method includes registering the transaction initiator prior to the transaction, and wherein registering the transaction initiator comprises: receiving a registration request from the transaction initiator; requesting service profile information for the transaction initiator, from an Infrastructure Node CSE, IN-CSE, in the M2M network; receiving the service profile information, from the IN-CSE, the service profile information including an indication of the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction initiator; and storing the indication of the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction initiator at the MN-CSE. 35 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the M2M SE comprises an Infrastructure Node Common Services Entity, IN-CSE, and wherein the method includes obtaining the M2M SP affiliation of the transaction initiator in advance of the transaction, based on receiving provisioning information from a provisioning application running on a provisioning application server. 36 . The method of claim 26 , wherein forwarding the transaction record, or the Charging Data Record, CDR, derived therefrom, towards the billing system associated with the M2M network comprises generating the CDR from the transaction record and forwarding the CDR individually, or batched together with one or more other CDRs associated with the same transaction or with one or more other transactions previously supported by the M2M SE. 37 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising recording a transaction type for the given transaction in the transaction record. 38 . A first Machine-to-Machine, M2M, node configured for operation as a M2M Support Entity, M2M SE, in a M2M network that includes the first M2M node and a number of other M2M entities, which may be affiliated with different M2M Service Providers, SPs, said first M2M node comprising: one or more communication interfaces configured to send and receive M2M signaling to one or more of the other M2M entities; and processing circuitry operatively associated with the one or more communication interfaces and operative to support M2M transactions involving given M2M entities and given M2M resources in the M2M network that are affiliated with different M2M SPs, based on being configured to: identify a transaction initiator and a transaction target, for a given transaction being supported by the M2M SE, wherein the transaction initiator comprises the given M2M entity in the M2M network that initiated the transaction and the transaction target comprises the given M2M resource in the M2M network that is targeted by the given transaction; identify M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target; generate a transaction record for the given transaction, and include in the transaction record the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target; store the transaction record at least temporarily in storage at the M2M SE; and forward the transaction record, or a Charging Data Record, CDR, derived therefrom, towards a billing system associated with the M2M network, for billing in dependence on the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target. 39 . The first M2M node of claim 38 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to identify the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target based on at least one of: information received by the M2M SE in conjunction with the given transaction, and affiliation information stored in the M2M SE in advance of the given transaction. 40 . The first M2M node of claim 38 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to identify the M2M SP affiliations of the transaction initiator and the transaction target, by: receiving a M2M identifier of the transaction initiator and/or a M2M identifier of the transaction target, in M2M signaling received by the M2M
