Official abstract text for this publication.
A system comprises a milking box, a robotic attacher, a sensor, and a controller. The milking box has a stall to accommodate a dairy livestock. The stall comprises a first exit gate on a first side of the stall leading to a first sorting region and a second exit gate on a second side of the stall leading to a second sorting region. The robotic attacher extends from the rear between the hind legs of the dairy livestock. The sensor identifies the dairy livestock within the milking box stall. The controller selects and opens the first exit gate or the second exit gate based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock in order to direct the first dairy livestock into either the first sorting region or the second sorting region.

What is claimed is: 1 . A system, comprising: a milking box having a stall to accommodate a dairy livestock, wherein the stall comprises a first exit gate on a first side of the stall leading to a first sorting region and a second exit gate on a second side of the stall leading to a second sorting region; a robotic attacher configured to extend from the rear between the hind legs of the dairy livestock in order to perform a milking operation upon the dairy livestock; a sensor configured to identify the dairy livestock within the milking box stall; and a controller configured to select and open the first exit gate or the second exit gate based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock in order to direct the first dairy livestock into either the first sorting region or the second sorting region. 2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the stall further comprises an entrance gate and the controller is further operable to close the entrance gate upon determining that the dairy livestock is within the milking box stall. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one preparation cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one teat cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the robotic attacher comprises: a main arm; a supplemental arm coupled to the main arm; and a gripping portion coupled to the supplemental arm. 6 . A system, comprising: a milking box having a stall to accommodate a dairy livestock, wherein the stall comprises a first exit gate on a first side of the stall leading to a first sorting region and a second exit gate on a second side of the stall leading to a second sorting region; a robotic attacher configured to extend from the rear between the hind legs of the dairy livestock in order to perform a milking operation upon the dairy livestock; a memory configured to store an identity of the dairy livestock located within the milking box stall; and a controller configured to select and open the first exit gate to the first sorting region or the second exit gate to the second sorting region based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock. 7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the stall further comprises an entrance gate and the controller is further operable to close the entrance gate upon determining that the dairy livestock is within the milking box stall. 8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one preparation cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 9 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one teat cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 10 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the robotic attacher comprises: a main arm; a supplemental arm coupled to the main arm; and a gripping portion coupled to the supplemental arm. 11 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the robotic attacher is operable to move in at least one direction along the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. 12 . A method, comprising: identifying by a sensor a dairy livestock within a milking box stall, wherein the milking box stall comprises a first exit gate on a first side of the stall leading to a first sorting region and a second exit gate on a second side of the stall leading to a second sorting region; extending a robotic attacher from the rear between the hind legs of the dairy livestock in order to perform a milking operation upon the dairy livestock; selecting by a controller one of the first exit gate leading to the first sorting region or the second exit gate leading to the second sorting region based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock; and opening by the controller the selected first exit gate or the second exit gate. 13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising: determining that the dairy livestock is within the milking box stall; closing an entrance gate of the milking box stall in response to determining that the dairy livestock is within the milking box stall. 14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one preparation cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the milking operation comprises attaching at least one teat cup to a teat of the dairy livestock. 16 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising milking the dairy livestock. 17 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising: determining whether to milk the dairy livestock based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock; and attaching milking equipment to the dairy livestock if it is determined that the dairy livestock is to be milked. 18 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising: moving the robotic attacher in at least one direction along the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis; and attaching milking equipment to the dairy livestock. 19 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising dropping feed into a feed bowl located within the stall of the milking box stall if it is determined that the dairy livestock is to be milked. 20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising positioning the feed bowl based at least in part upon the identity of the dairy livestock.
