Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A nose cone assembly is provided comprising a nose cone, a support ring on which the nose cone is mounted, and an insulating layer disposed between the nose cone and the support ring, the insulating layer at least partially comprising glass fibres. A composite nose cone is also provided comprising an attachment region A, in which composite fibres are oriented substantially perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the nose cone, and an impact region I, in which composite fibres are oriented substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the nose cone. Also provided is a support ring for a nose cone assembly, the support ring comprising an annular main body and an annular projecting attachment flange, the attachment flange terminating in a plurality of circumferentially spaced attachment tabs, wherein the attachment flange forms with the main body a cross section having at least two C curves.

1 . A nose cone assembly comprising: a composite nose cone, the composite nose cone having a substantially constant thickness; a support ring, the support ring comprising an annular main body and an annular attachment flange, an annular attachment flange comprising at least one locating feature, the annular attachment flange terminating in a plurality of circumferentially spaced attachment tabs; a plurality of separate circumferentially spaced mounting members, each mounting member comprising at least one locating feature, wherein the composite nose cone is mounted on the plurality of attachment tabs of the support ring, each mounting member being positioned between the composite nose cone and a respective one of the attachment tabs, the at least one locating feature of each mounting member cooperating with the at least one locating feature of the annular attachment flange. 2 . A nose cone assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one locating feature of the annular attachment flange comprising an annular shoulder having an axial locating surface and a radial locating surface, the at least one locating feature on each mounting member comprising a part annular ridge having an axial locating surface and a radial locating surface, the axial locating surface and the radial locating surface of each mounting member abutting the axial locating surface and the radial locating surface respectively of the annular attachment flange. 3 . A nose cone assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one locating feature on each mounting member comprising a dowel, each dowel engaging a corresponding locating feature on the annular attachment flange. 4 . A nose cone assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the nose cone is bolted on the plurality of attachment tabs of the support ring, the nose cone having a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures, each mounting member having an aperture and each attachment tab having an aperture, each bolt engaging an aperture in the nose cone, the aperture in the respective mounting member and the aperture in the respective attachment tab. 5 . A nose cone assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the composite nose cone comprises carbon fibres in a resin, the support ring is manufactured from a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, steel and titanium, and the mounting members consisting of glass fibres in a resin matrix.
