A protective shield device for a travel rail is provided, the travel rail including at least one robot with an application element coupled thereon. The protective shield device comprises at least one protective shield component for protecting the travel rail from the application medium, e.g. paint, dispensed by the application element of the at least one robot. The protective shield device is configured to extend over a portion of the travel rail and to move relative to the travel rail.

1 .- 18 . (canceled) 19 . An assembly comprising: a laterally extending travel rail; at least one robot directly coupled to the travel rail, the at least one robot including an application element configured for dispensing an application medium in a coating operation; and a protective shield device coupled to the travel rail, the protective shield device including a shield component vertically extending at least to a height of the travel rail, the shield component vertically arranged to overlap the height of the travel rail, the shield component laterally extending less than a length of the travel rail, wherein the at least one robot and the protective shield device are laterally movable along the travel rail, and the protective shield device is configured to position the shield component to screen a portion of the travel rail from the application medium. 20 . The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the protective shield device includes at least one mounting device movably coupling the travel rail. 21 . The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the at least one mounting device directly couples the protective shield device to the travel rail independent of the at least one robot. 22 . The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the at least one robot is configured to position the protective shield device along the travel rail by contacting the protective shield device to at least one of push and pull the protective shield device. 23 . The assembly of claim 22 , wherein the protective shield device is coupled to the at least one robot via a pliable, tensile force-transmitting component. 24 . The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the protective shield device includes a drive device operable to move the protective shield device along the travel rail. 25 . The assembly of claim 22 , wherein at least one of the protective shield device and the at least one robot includes a buffer component positioned between the protective shield device and the at least one robot, the buffer component absorbing impact forces at the contacting of the protective shield device and the at least one robot. 26 . The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the protective shield device includes at least one dispensing unit configured to dispense a lubricant onto the travel rail. 27 . The assembly of claim 26 , wherein the dispensing unit is connected to a lubricant device, the lubricant device receiving and admitting the lubricant to the dispensing unit. 28 . The assembly of claim 27 , wherein the dispensing unit is arranged on the at least one mounting device of the protective shield device. 29 . The assembly of claim 20 , wherein the protective shield device including a supporting structure coupling the shield component and the at least one mounting device. 30 . The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the protective shield device is mounted on the at least one robot and moves together with the at least one robot along the travel rail. 31 . The assembly of claim 30 , wherein the protective shield is coupled laterally beside the at least one robot. 32 . The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the protective shield is panel-shaped. 33 . The assembly of claim 32 , wherein the protective shield device includes at least one laterally extending flange shaped toward the travel rail. 34 . The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the at least one robot is a painting robot. 35 . The assembly of claim 35 , wherein the application element is a rotary atomizer, and the application medium is a paint. 36 . The assembly of claim 19 including two robots, each of the two robots directly coupled to the travel rail. 37 . The assembly of claim 36 , wherein the protective shield device is mounted directly on the travel rail between the two robots, each of the two robots being configured to position the protective shield device along the travel rail by contacting the protective shield device to at least one of push and pull the protective shield device. 38 . The assembly of claim 36 , wherein the protective shield device is mounted on one of the two robots, and is movable together with the one of the two robots.
