Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A catheter having a catheter body with a lumen and a distal lumen opening. The catheter's lumen extends through the catheter body along a longitudinal axis of the catheter body. A hole is formed through a wall of a distal portion of the catheter body. A portion of the proximal surface of the hole is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body. The acute angle of the proximal hole surface opens proximally with respect to the catheter body.

What is claimed is: 1 . A catheter, comprising: a catheter body, wherein the catheter body includes a single lumen and a distal lumen opening, wherein the lumen extends through the catheter body along a longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein a distal end of the catheter body forms a tapered tip; and a hole formed through at least a portion of the tapered tip, wherein the hole has a width that is less than an inner diameter of the single lumen, wherein the hole includes a distal surface that extends from an outer opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip to an inner opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip, wherein the distal surface is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein the acute angle opens distally with respect to the catheter body. 2 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the acute angle of the distal surface of the hole is between about 20° and about 90°. 3 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a length of the outer opening is greater than a width of the outer opening, wherein the length is aligned with the longitudinal axis. 4 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a length of the outer opening is between 1.2 and 3.0 times the width of the outer opening. 5 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a length of the outer opening is between 1.3 and 2.5 times the width of the outer opening. 6 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a length of the outer opening is between 1.4 and 2.2 times the width of the outer opening. 7 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the outer opening includes a distal end, a proximal end, and two sides extending between the distal end of the outer opening and the proximal end of the outer opening, wherein the two sides are parallel. 8 . The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the distal end of the outer opening is rounded, wherein the proximal end of the outer opening is rounded. 9 . The catheter of claim 8 , wherein the outer opening is symmetric. 10 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the distal surface is substantially planar. 11 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the distal surface is constantly sloped. 12 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the distal surface is rounded. 13 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the outer opening is larger than the inner opening. 14 . The peripheral catheter of claim 1 , wherein the hole is at least partially disposed on the tapered tip. 15 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the catheter is a peripheral catheter having a truncated length sufficient to access a peripheral vein of a patient and an outer diameter less than or equal to that of a twelve gauge catheter. 16 . A catheter, comprising: a catheter body, wherein the catheter body includes a single lumen and a distal lumen opening, wherein the lumen extends through the catheter body along a longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein a distal end of the catheter body forms a tapered tip; and a hole formed through at least a portion of the tapered tip, wherein the hole has a width that is less than an inner diameter of the single lumen, wherein the hole includes a distal surface that extends from an outer opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip to an inner opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip, wherein the distal surface is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein the acute angle opens distally with respect to the catheter body, wherein the outer opening includes a distal end, a proximal end, and two sides extending between the distal end of the outer opening and the proximal end of the outer opening, wherein the two sides are parallel. 17 . The catheter of claim 16 , wherein the distal end of the outer opening is rounded, wherein the proximal end of the outer opening is rounded. 18 . The catheter of claim 16 , wherein the outer opening is symmetric. 19 . A catheter, comprising: a catheter body, wherein the catheter body includes a single lumen and a distal lumen opening, wherein the lumen extends through the catheter body along a longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein a distal end of the catheter body forms a tapered tip; and a hole formed through at least a portion of the tapered tip, wherein the hole has a width that is less than an inner diameter of the single lumen, wherein the hole includes a distal surface that extends from an outer opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip to an inner opening of the catheter body or the tapered tip, wherein the distal surface is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body, wherein the acute angle opens distally with respect to the catheter body, wherein the outer opening includes a distal end, a proximal end, and two sides extending between the distal end of the outer opening and the proximal end of the outer opening, wherein the distal end of the outer opening is rounded, wherein the proximal end of the outer opening is rounded. 20 . The catheter of claim 19 , wherein the two sides are parallel, wherein the distal end of the outer opening is symmetric.
