A shieldable needle device includes a hub with and a needle cannula having a puncture tip extending from a forward end thereof, and a shield member in telescoping association with the hub. At least one of the hub and the shield member are adapted for relative axial movement with respect to the other between a first position in which the puncture tip of the needle cannula is exposed from a forward end of the shield member and a second position in which the puncture tip of the needle cannula is encompassed within the shield member. A drive member extends between the hub and the shield member, biasing the hub and the shield member axially away from each other. A packaging cover may further extend about the needle cannula, applying external pressure between the cooperating portions of the hub and the shield.

What is claimed is: 1 . A method of activating a needle device comprising: providing the needle device comprising: a hub including a dorsal member extending from an external surface thereof and a needle cannula having a puncture tip extending from a forward end thereof; a shield telescopically moveable with respect to the hub between a retracted position in which the puncture tip is exposed and biased toward an extended position covering the puncture tip, the shield including a grip structure extending dorsally from an external surface thereof for corresponding engagement with the dorsal member of the hub to form a dorsal grasping structure when the shield is in the retracted position; and a packaging cover releasably attached to a forward end of the needle device for maintaining the shield in the retracted position against the bias and covering the puncture tip; grasping the needle device at the dorsal grasping structure to apply pressure between the grip structure of the shield and the dorsal member of the hub; removing the packaging cover from the forward end of the hub; and releasing the pressure between the grip structure of the shield and the dorsal member of the hub, thereby permitting the bias to move the shield toward the extended position. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the grasping step establishes frictional engagement between the grip structure of the shield and the dorsal member of the hub. 3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the dorsal member of the hub comprises a generally planar spine extending dorsally from the external surface of the hub in a plane corresponding to a longitudinal axis defined by the needle cannula, and wherein at least a portion of the shield extends within the hub and the grip structure of the shield comprises a pair of flexibly resilient planar leafs extending dorsally from a forward end of the shield in a plane corresponding to the longitudinal axis defined by the needle cannula, the pair of planar leafs being spaced from each other to define an opening therebetween for accommodating the spine of the hub, and wherein the grasping step comprises gripping opposing surfaces of the pair of planar leafs with the spine maintained within the opening therebetween. 4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising the step of preventing the shield from returning to the retracted position after moving to the extended position. 5 . A shielding needle assembly, comprising: a needle cannula having a proximal end and a distal end with a puncture tip; a hub having a proximal end and a distal end, the hub supporting the needle cannula and comprising a release member; a barrel having a proximal end, a distal end, and defining a passage extending substantially therebetween, the hub disposed in the passage and movable relative to the barrel from a distal position wherein at least the puncture tip of the needle cannula projects from the barrel distal end and a proximal position wherein the needle cannula is encompassed by the barrel, the barrel comprising at least one outwardly biased release tab; a drive member for biasing the hub toward the proximal position; and a packaging cover removably disposed on the barrel and enclosing the puncture tip in the distal position of the hub and restraining the at least one release tab, wherein interference engagement between the at least one release tab and the release member maintains the hub in the distal position, and wherein application of radial pressure to the at least one release tab permits removal of the packaging cover, and sufficient release of the at least one release tab permits the at least one release tab to move out of interference engagement with the release member, allowing the drive member to move the hub toward the proximal position. 6 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the drive member is disposed in the barrel and associated with the hub for moving the hub toward the proximal position. 7 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the release member extends distally from the hub. 8 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the release member comprises a release button adapted for engagement by the at least one release tab for maintaining the hub in the distal position. 9 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one release tab extends longitudinally along the barrel. 10 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one release tab is formed integrally with the barrel. 11 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one release tab comprises opposing release tabs disposed on opposing lateral sides of the barrel, the opposing release tabs cooperatively defining an opening for receiving the release member in interference engagement with the release tabs. 12 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , further comprising at least one locking member associated with the barrel and adapted to engage the hub when the hub substantially reaches the proximal position for preventing re-exposure of the needle cannula. 13 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 12 , wherein the at least one locking member projects inward in the barrel, and is adapted to engage an edge on the hub. 14 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one release tab is formed with a finger pad. 15 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the packaging cover comprises a locking groove and the at least one release tab comprises a locking rib engaged in the locking groove for restraining the at least one release tab. 16 . The shielding needle assembly of claim 5 , wherein the at least one release tab is formed with a finger pad and a locking rib is formed on the finger pad. 17 . A method of actuating a shielding needle assembly, comprising: providing the shielding needle assembly, comprising a needle cannula having a puncture tip; a hub supporting the needle cannula such that the puncture tip is exposed in the shielding needle assembly; a release member; a barrel, the hub movably disposed in the barrel and the barrel comprising at least one release tab in interference engagement with the release member for maintaining the positioning of the hub such that the puncture tip is exposed; and a drive member associated with the hub for moving the hub in the barrel; applying pressure to the at least one release tab, such that the at least one release tab is maintained in interference engagement with the release member; and releasing the pressure a sufficient amount, such that the drive member retracts the hub into the barrel to a position where the barrel encompasses the needle cannula. 18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the shielding needle assembly further comprises a packaging cover disposed on the barrel and shielding the puncture tip, and wherein the step of applying pressure to the at least one release tab permits removal of the packaging cover from the barrel. 19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the packaging cover comprises a locking groove and the at least one release tab comprises a locking rib engaged in the locking groove for maintaining the packaging cover on the barrel, and wherein the step of applying pressure to the at least one release tab causes the locking rib to disengage from the locking groove, permitting removal of the packaging cover from the barrel.
