Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An autosteroscopic multi-view display comprises a first image generator ( 807 ) which generates first images for views of a first group of contiguous views of the views of the display. A second image generator ( 809 ) generates second images for views of a second group of contiguous views and a third image generator ( 811 ) generates a third image for at least one view of a third group of contiguous views. The first images correspond to a right eye viewing angle and the second images correspond to a left eye viewing angle of a scene. The third image corresponds to a viewing angle between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. The use of a transitional group of views corresponding to intermediate viewing angles may substantially reduce cross talk and ghosting effects. It may in combination with viewer tracking provide a practical and high performance autostereoscopic multi-view display allowing increased depth levels.

1 . An apparatus for generating images for an autosteroscopic multi-view display arranged to display a plurality of views; the apparatus comprising: a first image generator for generating first images for views of a first group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, the first images corresponding to a right eye viewing angle; a second image generator for generating second images for views of a second group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, the second images corresponding to a left eye viewing angle; and a third image generator for generating a third image for at least one view of a third group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, the third group of contiguous views comprising views between the first group of contiguous views and the second group of contiguous views; wherein the third image corresponds to a viewing angle which is between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. 2 . The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a receiver arranged to receive a three dimensional image, wherein the first image generator is arranged to generate the first images from the three dimensional image, wherein the second image generator is arranged to generate the second images from the three dimensional image, wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate the third image from the three dimensional image. 3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the three dimensional image is a stereo image comprising a left eye image and a right eye image wherein the first image generator is arranged to generate the first images to correspond to the right eye image, wherein the second image generator is arranged to generate the second images to correspond to the left eye image, wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate the third image by view point shifting applied to at least one of the left eye image and the right eye image. 4 . The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a disparity adapter arranged to adapt disparities between the left eye image and the right eye image prior to the generation of the first images, the second images and the third image. 5 . The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the three dimensional image is a single viewpoint image with associated depth information wherein the first image generator is arranged to generate the first images by view point shifting of the single viewpoint image based on the associated depth information, wherein the second image generator is arranged to generate the second images by view point shifting of the single viewpoint image based on the associated depth information, wherein the view point shifting of the second images is in an opposite direction of the view point shifting of the first images; wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate the third image to correspond to the single viewpoint image. 6 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the third group of contiguous views comprises a plurality of views, and the third image generator is arranged to generate images for all views of the third group of contiguous views to correspond to third viewing angles, wherein the third viewing angles are between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. 7 . The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate images for the plurality of views of the third group of contiguous views as at least part of the third image. 8 . The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate images for the plurality of views of the third contiguous group to correspond to the third viewing angles, wherein the third viewing angels have having a monotonic relationship to a distance of the views to the first group of contiguous views. 9 . The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the relationship is a linear relationship. 10 . The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising: a viewer position tracking unit arranged to generate a user viewing angle estimate; and an adaptor arranged to adapt a direction of at least one viewing cone formed by the plurality of views in response to the user viewing angle estimate. 11 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein all views of the plurality of views of the multi view display belong to one of the first group of contiguous views, the second group of contiguous views, and the third group of contiguous views. 12 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the third image generator is arranged to generate different partial images for at least some views of the third group of contiguous views. 13 . An autosteroscopic multi-view display arranged to display a plurality of views, the autosteroscopic multi-view display comprising: a first image generator arranged to generate first images for views of a first group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the first images correspond to a right eye viewing angle; a second image generator arranged to generate second images for views of a second group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the second images correspond to a left eye viewing angle; a third image generator arranged to generate a third image for at least one view of a third group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the third group of contiguous views comprise views between the first group of contiguous views and the second group of contiguous views; wherein the third image corresponds to a viewing angle which is between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. 14 . A method of generating images for an autosteroscopic multi-view display comprising: generating first images for views of a first group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the first images correspond to a right eye viewing angle; generating second images for views of a second group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the second images correspond to a left eye viewing angle; generating a third image for at least one view of a third group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the third group of contiguous views comprise views between the first group of contiguous views and the second group of contiguous views; wherein the third image corresponds to a viewing angle which is between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. 15 . A computer program product comprising computer program code adapted to perform the steps of the method comprising: generating first images for views of a first group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the first images correspond to a right eye viewing angle; generating second images for views of a second group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the second images correspond to a left eye viewing angle; generating a third image for at least one view of a third group of contiguous views of the plurality of views, wherein the third group of contiguous views comprise views between the first group of contiguous views and the second group of contiguous views; wherein the third image corresponds to a viewing angle which is between the right eye viewing angle and the left eye viewing angle. 16 . The method of claim 14 further comprising a receiver arranged to receive a three dimensional image, wherein the first images are generated from the first images of the three dimensional image, wherein the second images are generated from the three dimensional image, wherein the third image is generated from the three dimensional image. 17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the three dimensional image is a stereo i
