Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.

1 . A method comprising: converting a sugar into a fuel, wherein the sugar is obtained from a biomass and the fuel is a non-ethanol based motor fuel or aviation fuel. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein converting comprises saccharifying the treated biomass material to produce a composition comprising sugars and converting the sugars into fuel. 3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the biomass is comprises cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sugar comprises glucose and/or xylose. 5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sugar comprises a disaccharide. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sugar comprises a trisaccharide. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sugar has a formula weight excluding moisture of less than about 2000. 8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein converting the sugars into fuel comprises fermentation. 9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein fermentation comprises contacting the sugars with a fermenting microorganism. 10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the fermenting microorganism comprises a yeast. 11 . A method comprising: a. converting a sugar into a fuel, wherein the sugar is obtained from a biomass and the fuel is a non-ethanol based fuel wherein the fuel is suitable for use in an internal combustion engine. 12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein converting comprises saccharifying the treated biomass material to produce a composition comprising sugars and converting the sugars into fuel. 13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the biomass is comprises cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials. 14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the sugars comprise glucose and/or xylose. 15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein converting the sugars into fuel comprises fermentation. 16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein fermentation comprises contacting the sugars with a fermenting microorganism. 17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the fermenting microorganism comprises a yeast.
