Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A self-healing polymeric composition includes a polymer matrix and a plurality of functional microcapsules dispersed in the polymer matrix. The functional microcapsules include a core of a flowable material that can form film via coalescence, physical crosslinking and/or polymerization on contact with the substrate, and a polymer shell encapsulating the core. The functionality on the polymer shell is effective in complexing with the corrosion by-products, releasing the core material to repair the failure.

1 . A self-healing polymeric composition comprising: a polymer matrix and a plurality of microcapsules dispersed in the polymer matrix; the microcapsules including a core of a flowable polymerizable material that can polymerize on contact with the substrate that are capable of generating reducing agents such as iron (II) or Al (III) ions under stressed or corrosive environment, and a polymer shell encapsulating the core; the polymer shell effective for rupturing with a failure of the polymer matrix to allow flow of the polymerizable material to repair the failure. 2 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the polymerizable material is thermoplastic. 3 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 2 wherein the polymerizable material comprises thermoplastic oligomers. 4 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 3 wherein the thermoplastic oligomers have solubility parameter below or equal to 25 Mpa 1/2 , number average molecular weight between 250 and 7000 and viscosity below or equal to 500 cps. 5 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 3 wherein the thermoplastic oligomers have one or more hydroxyl, amine, carboxyl, vinyl and acrylic functionality. 6 . The self-healing polymer composition of claim 3 wherein the polymerizable material further comprises a peroxygen compound. 7 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 6 wherein the peroxygen compound is in the amount between 0.1-1.0 wt % and the preferred peroxygen compounds are ammonium peroxydisulfate, potassium peroxydisulfate and peroxy disphosphate. 8 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the flowable polymerizable material is stable in the microcapsules. 9 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the flowable polymerizable material has a low viscosity below or equal to 500 cps. 10 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer shell is cross-linked to increase its brittleness and susceptibility to rupture. 11 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer matrix comprises a paint and an unencapsulated activator or catalyst. 12 . (canceled) 13 . (canceled) 14 . A self-healing polymeric composition comprising: a polymer matrix and a plurality of microcapsules dispersed in the polymer matrix; the microcapsules including a core of a flowable polymerizable material that can polymerize on contact with the substrate that are capable of generating reducing agents such as iron (II) or Al (III) ions under stressed or corrosive environment, a polymer shell encapsulating the core, and a corrosion sensing functional group attached to the polymer shell; the polymer shell effective for rupturing with a failure of the polymer matrix to allow flow of the polymerizable material to repair the failure. 15 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 14 wherein the corrosion sensing functional group is effective to provide a visual, optical or spectral indication upon contact with a corrosion by-product. 16 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 14 wherein the polymerizable material can polymerize on contact with the substrate. 17 . The self-healing polymeric composition of claim 16 wherein the polymerizable material is thermoplastic. 18 .
