Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A power operated knife comprises a blade supporting structure supporting an annular blade for rotation about a central axis. The blade and blade supporting structure are engageable along bearing contact locations that are spaced apart in a direction parallel to the axis so that the blade is stabilized both radially and axially as the knife operates. The blade supporting structures comprises a split blade housing member that is radially expandable and contractible to receive the blade. The split blade housing member and blade engage along relatively short lines of bearing contact that serve to minimize friction and blade heating when the knife operates. The bearing locations are spaced apart both circumferentially around the blade perimeter and in the direction of the axis so that the blade position is stabilized during operation of the knife.

1 - 23 . (canceled) 24 . A rotary knife blade comprising an annular body defining first and second axial ends, the body disposed about a central axis; and an annular blade section projecting axially from the first axial end of the annular body; the annular body including a radially outer surface disposed between said first and second axial ends, and a bearing bead extending outwardly from the radially outer surface, the bearing bead spaced axially from the blade section and comprising a first bearing surface and an axially spaced apart second bearing surface, the first and second bearing surfaces converging in opposite axial directions. 25 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the bearing bead is annular. 26 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the annular body comprises a wall including the radially outer surface. 27 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the first and second bearing surfaces are arcuate in cross section. 28 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the bearing bead is substantially semicircular in cross section. 29 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the bearing bead extends continuously about the radially outer surface of the wall of the annular body. 30 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the radially outer surface of the wall of the annular body includes a substantially cylindrical portion and the bearing bead extends radially outwardly from the cylindrical portion of the radially outer surface. 31 . The rotary knife blade of claim 24 wherein the annular blade section includes a cutting edge at an end of the annular blade section, the cutting edge axially spaced from the first axial end of the annular body and the rotary knife blade including an inner surface including a first section and a second section, the first section extending from the cutting edge and the second section located further from the cutting edge that the first section wherein the first and second sections of the inner surface are angled relative to each other. 32 . A rotary knife blade comprising an annular body defining first and second axial ends, the body disposed about a central axis; and an annular blade section rotatable with the annular body and projecting axially from the first axial end of the body; the annular body including a radially outer surface disposed between said first and second axial ends of the annular body, and a bearing bead extending outwardly from the radially outer surface, the bearing bead comprising a first bearing surface and an axially spaced apart second bearing surface, the first bearing surface converging proceeding toward the second axial end and the second bearing surface converging proceeding away from the first bearing surface. 33 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the bearing bead is annular. 34 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the annular body comprises a wall including the radially outer surface. 34 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the first and second bearing surfaces are arcuate in cross section. 35 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the bearing bead is substantially semicircular in cross section. 36 . The rotary knife blade of claim 29 wherein the bearing bead extends continuously about the radially outer surface of the wall of the rotatable annular body. 37 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the radially outer surface of the wall of the rotatable annular body includes a substantially cylindrical portion and the bearing bead extends radially outwardly from the cylindrical portion of the radially outer surface. 38 . The rotary knife blade of claim 32 wherein the annular blade section includes a cutting edge at an end of the annular blade section, the cutting edge axially spaced from the first axial end of the annular body and the rotary knife blade including an inner surface including a first section and a second section, the first section extending from the cutting edge and the second section located further from the cutting edge that the first section wherein the first and second sections of the inner surface are angled relative to one another.
