Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An inhaler device for facilitating the inhalation of a medicament from a pierceable medicament capsule, the inhaler device including a body having a chamber for receiving a pierceable medicament capsule, piercing means for piercing a medicament capsule received in the chamber, an actuating member moveable relative to the body, and a plurality of cam members and a cam track. One movement of the actuating member relative to the body causes one of the cam members to move along the cam track in abutment therewith, the piercing means thereby being pressed from a retracted position to an extended position and another movement of the actuating member relative to the body causes the other one of the cam members to move along the cam track in abutment therewith so that the piercing means is pressed from an extended position towards a retracted position.

1 . An inhaler device for facilitating inhalation of a medicament from a pierceable medicament capsule, the inhaler device comprising: a body having a chamber for receiving the pierceable medicament capsule; piercing means for piercing the medicament capsule received in the chamber; an actuator rotatably mounted to the body; an actuating member moveable relative to the body so as to rotate the actuator; a cam track member connected to the piercing means and comprising a plurality of cam track parts along which the actuator slides; wherein a first movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the actuator along and in abutment with a first one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards an extended position; and wherein a second movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the actuator along and in abutment with a second one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards a retracted position. 2 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein the abutment with the first cam track part is by a first cam member of the actuator, and the abutment with the second cam track part is by a second cam member of the actuator. 3 . The inhaler device of claim 2 , wherein a third movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the second cam member of the actuator along and in abutment with a third one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards a retracted position; and wherein a fourth movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the first cam member of the actuator along and in abutment with a fourth one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards the extended position. 4 . The inhaler device of claim 3 , wherein the actuating member is moveable back and forth between first and second limits of movement, wherein movement of the actuating member from the first limit to the second limit comprises in sequence the first movement followed by the third movement of the actuating member, and wherein movement of the actuating member from the second limit to the first limit comprises in sequence the fourth movement followed by the second movement of the actuating member. 5 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein the abutment with the first cam track part is by a first cam member of the actuator, and the abutment with the second cam track part is by the first cam member. 6 . The inhaler device of claim 5 , wherein the actuator comprises a second cam member, wherein a third movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the second cam member along and in abutment with a third one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and drive the piercing means from an extended position to a partially retracted position, and wherein the second movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the first cam member of the actuator along and in abutment with the second one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means from the partially retracted position to a fully retracted position. 7 . The inhaler device of claim 6 , wherein a fourth movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the first cam member of the actuator along and in abutment with a fourth one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards the extended position; wherein a fifth movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the first cam member of the actuator along and in abutment with a fifth one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and thereby drive the piercing means towards the fully retracted position; wherein a sixth movement of the actuating member relative to the body slides the second cam member along and in abutment with a sixth one of the cam track parts so as to press against the cam track member and drive the piercing means from the extended position to the partially retracted position, and wherein the fifth movement of the actuating member drives the piercing means from the partially retracted position to the fully retracted position. 8 . The inhaler device of claim 7 , wherein the actuating member is moveable back and forth between first and second limits of movement, wherein movement of the actuating member from the first limit to the second limit comprises in sequence the first movement followed by the sixth movement followed by the fifth movement of the actuating member movement of the actuating member from the second limit to the first limit comprises in sequence the fourth movement followed by the third movement followed by the second movement of the actuating member. 9 . The inhaler device of claim 4 , wherein, at the first limit of movement, the chamber is closed by the actuating member so as to retain captive in the chamber the medicament capsule received in the chamber, and wherein, at the second limit of movement, the chamber is open so as to allow release from the chamber the medicament capsule received in the chamber. 10 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises means constraining movement of the cam track member to reciprocal linear movement within a single plane relative to the body. 11 . The inhaler device of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of cam track parts are located in the single plane. 12 . The inhaler device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator is rotatable about an axis extending perpendicularly to the single plane. 13 . The inhaler device of claim 12 , wherein at least one cam member of the actuator is located in the single plane. 14 . The inhaler device of claim 10 , wherein the piercing means is located in the single plane. 15 . The inhaler device of claim 10 , wherein the constraining means abuts the cam track member so as to constrain movement of the cam track member. 16 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein the actuating member comprises a mouthpiece through which, in use, the medicament from the pierceable medicament capsule in the chamber is inhaled. 17 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein, in the extended position, at least a part of the piercing means extends within the chamber from one side of the chamber towards an opposite side of the chamber. 18 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , wherein a means of providing a point contact to the medicament capsule is located in the chamber. 19 . The inhaler device of claim 1 , further comprising means for supporting a lower end of the chamber. 20 . (canceled) 21 . The inhaler device of claim 19 , wherein the supporting means limits or prevents lateral movement of the chamber at the lower end of the chamber. 22 . The inhaler device of claim 8 , wherein, at the first limit of movement, the chamber is closed by the actuating member so as to retain captive in the chamber the medicament capsule received in the chamber, and wherein, at the second limit of movement, the chamber is open so as to allow release from the chamber the medicament capsule received in the chamber.
