Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A node is disclosed. The node may have a first structural member. The node may also have a second structural member disposed at an angle relative to the first structural member. Further, the node may have a first end plate attached to a first end of the first structural member. The node may also have a second end plate attached to a second end of the second structural member. In addition the node may have a connector plate attached to the first end plate and the second end plate. The connector plate may be disposed generally orthogonal to the first end plate and the second end plate.

What is claimed is: 1 . A node, comprising: a first structural member; a second structural member disposed at an angle relative to the first structural member; a first end plate attached to a first end of the first structural member; a second end plate attached to a second end of the second structural member; and a connector plate attached to the first end plate and the second end plate, the connector plate being disposed generally orthogonal to the first end plate and the second end plate. 2 . The node of claim 1 , wherein the first end plate has a first front face extending between a first leading edge and a first trailing edge, the first front face also extending between a first proximal edge and a first distal edge; and the second end plate has a second front face extending between a second leading edge and a second trailing edge, the second front face also extending between a second proximal edge and a second distal edge. 3 . The node of claim 2 , wherein the first end plate has a first rear face spaced apart from the first front face at a first thickness and the first structural member is attached to the first rear face, and the second end plate has a second rear face spaced apart from the second front face at a second thickness and the second structural member is attached to the second rear face. 4 . The node of claim 3 , wherein the connector plate includes: a first attachment edge; and a second attachment edge inclined at the angle relative to the first attachment edge. 5 . The node of claim 4 , wherein the first attachment edge is attached to the first distal edge; and the second attachment edge is attached to the second distal edge. 6 . The node of claim 5 , wherein the first leading edge is disposed parallel to the first trailing edge, the first proximal edge is disposed parallel to the first distal edge, and the first leading edge is disposed generally orthogonal to the first proximal edge. 7 . The node of claim 5 , wherein the first leading edge has a first length about equal to a second length of the second leading edge, the first proximal edge has a first width, and the second proximal edge has a second width different from the first width. 8 . The node of claim 7 , wherein the first length, the first width, and the second width are larger than a maximum of a first diameter of the first structural member and a second diameter of the second structural member. 9 . The node of claim 5 , wherein the connector plate is a first connector plate, and the node further includes: a second connector plate spaced apart from the first connector plate, the second connector plate, including: a third attachment edge disposed adjacent to and connected to the first proximal edge; and a fourth attachment edge disposed adjacent to and connected to the second proximal edge. 10 . The node of claim 5 , wherein the first structural member is disposed generally orthogonal to the first rear face. 11 . The node of claim 5 , wherein the first structural member is disposed inclined to the first rear face. 12 . The node of claim 2 , wherein the first end plate and the second end plate are attached to the connector plate using welding. 13 . The node of claim 1 , wherein the angle is a first angle, and the node further includes: a third structural member disposed at a second angle relative the second structural member, the second angle being different from the first angle; a third end plate attached to a third end of the third structural member, wherein the connector plate is attached to the third end plate, the connector plate being disposed generally orthogonal to the third end plate. 14 . A method of fabricating a node, comprising: fabricating a sub-assembly, including: fabricating a first end plate; fabricating a first structural member having a first longitudinal axis, the first structural member extending from a first end to a second end; locating the first end plate adjacent the first end; and attaching the first end plate to the first end of a structural member; fabricating a connector plate; locating the connector plate generally orthogonal to the first end plate; and attaching the first end plate to the connector plate. 15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein fabricating the connector plate includes: fabricating the connector plate from sheet metal stock; machining a first attachment edge on the connector plate; machining a second attachment edge on the connector plate such that the second attachment edge is inclined relative to the first attachment edge. 16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein attaching the first end plate includes: assembling the sub-assembly and the connector plate so that the first attachment edge abuts a first distal edge of the first end plate; and attaching the first distal edge of the first end plate to the first attachment edge of the connector plate. 17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the sub-assembly is a first sub-assembly, and the method further includes: assembling a second end plate of a second sub-assembly generally orthogonal to the connector plate; and attaching a second distal edge of the second end plate to the second attachment edge of the connector plate. 18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the first end plate extends from a first leading edge to a first trailing edge, the second end plate extends from a second leading edge to a second trailing edge, and the method further includes attaching the first trailing edge of the first end plate to the second leading edge of the second end plate. 19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the connector plate is a first connector plate, and the method further includes: fabricating a second connector plate having a third attachment edge and a fourth attachment edge; attaching a first proximal edge of the first end plate to the third attachment edge; and attaching a second proximal edge of the second end plate to the fourth attachment edge of the second connector plate. 20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein attaching the first proximal edge and the second proximal edge includes: welding the first proximal edge to the third attachment edge; and welding the second proximal edge to the fourth attachment edge.
