Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for cooling or cleaning a slip ring assembly of a generator of a wind turbine. The slip ring assembly is at least partially enclosed in a slip ring compartment. In addition, the slip ring assembly includes an electrically conductive slip ring mounted to the rotatable shaft and a fixed conductive ring assembly having slip-ring contacting members mounted thereon. The conduit assembly is configured to direct fluid into the slip ring compartment so as to cool or clean the slip ring compartment. Further, the conduit assembly extends from a first end to a second end. More specifically, the first end is configured at or before an inlet of the generator assembly, whereas the second end is configured at the slip ring compartment.

What is claimed is: 1 . A generator assembly for a wind turbine, the generator assembly comprising: a rotor assembly having rotor windings which rotates about a rotatable shaft; a stator having stator windings; a slip ring assembly configured to apply current to the rotor assembly, the slip ring assembly at least partially enclosed in a slip ring compartment, the slip ring assembly comprising an electrically conductive slip ring mounted to the rotatable shaft and a fixed conductive ring assembly having slip-ring contacting members mounted thereon; and, a conduit assembly configured to direct fluid into the slip ring compartment so as to cool or clean the slip ring assembly, the conduit assembly extending from a first end to a second end, the first end being configured at or before an inlet of the generator assembly, the second end being configured with the slip ring compartment. 2 . The generator assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a generator housing configured to at least partially enclose the rotor assembly and the stator. 3 . The generator assembly of claim 2 , further comprising a generator heat exchanger and a fan, the generator heat exchanger and the fan configured to control a temperature of the generator housing. 4 . The generator assembly of claim 3 , wherein the conduit assembly is configured at or before an inlet of the generator heat exchanger and after the fan such that the fan directs the fluid through the conduit assembly so as to cool or clean the slip ring assembly. 5 . The generator assembly of claim 1 , wherein the conduit assembly comprises a plurality of conduit members arranged together from the first end to the second end so as to direct fluid from the inlet of the generator assembly to the slip ring assembly. 6 . The generator assembly of claim 5 , wherein the conduit assembly further comprises at least one of or a combination of straight conduit members, bent conduit members, or curved conduit members. 7 . The generator assembly of claim 5 , wherein the conduit assembly further comprises one or more support brackets configured to support and mount the one or more conduit members to an exterior surface of the generator housing. 8 . The generator assembly of claim 1 , wherein the slip-ring contacting members comprise brushes. 9 . The generator assembly of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises ambient air. 10 . A system for cooling or cleaning a slip ring assembly of a generator, the slip ring assembly being at least partially enclosed in a slip ring compartment and having an electrically conductive slip ring mounted to a rotatable shaft and a fixed conductive ring assembly having slip-ring contacting members mounted thereon, the system comprising: a conduit assembly configured to direct fluid into the slip ring compartment so as to cool or clean the slip ring compartment, the conduit assembly extending from a first end to a second end, the first end being configured at or before an inlet of the generator, the second end being configured with the slip ring compartment. 11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the generator comprises a rotor assembly having rotor windings which rotate about the rotatable shaft and a stator having stator windings, the rotor assembly and the stator being at least partially enclosed within a generator housing. 12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the generator further comprises a generator heat exchanger and a fan, the generator heat exchanger and the fan configured to control a temperature of the generator housing. 13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the conduit assembly is configured at or before an inlet of the generator heat exchanger and after the fan such that the fan directs the fluid through the conduit assembly. 14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the conduit assembly comprises a plurality of conduit members arranged together from the first end to the second end so as to direct fluid from the inlet of the generator assembly to the slip ring assembly. 15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the conduit assembly further comprises at least one of or a combination of straight conduit members, bent conduit members, or curved conduit members. 16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the conduit assembly further comprises one or more support brackets configured to support and mount the one or more conduit members to an exterior surface of the generator housing. 17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the slip-ring contacting members comprise brushes. 18 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the fluid comprises ambient air. 19 . A method for cooling or cleaning a slip ring assembly of a generator, the slip ring assembly being at least partially enclosed in a slip ring compartment and having an electrically conductive slip ring mounted to a rotatable shaft and a fixed conductive ring assembly having slip-ring contacting members mounted thereon, the method comprising: installing a conduit assembly having a first end and second end onto the generator, the first end being installed at or before an inlet of the generator, the second end being installed at the slip ring compartment; and, directing a fluid through the conduit assembly from the inlet of the generator to the slip ring assembly. 20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising directing the fluid through the conduit assembly via an existing fan of the generator.
