A knife sharpening sheath has an open end for receiving a knife, and which open end also includes provision for receiving and securing a knife sharpening cartridge. The sheath includes openings in opposing sides and the knife sharpening cartridge includes rearwardly extending legs configured to be received by, and secured into said openings in the opposing sides.

What is claimed is: 1 . A knife sheath comprising: a body having opposing sides, a closed distal end and an open proximal end; a knife receiving slot accessible from the open proximal end and being configured to receive and secure a knife; a knife sharpener receiving slot disposed within the open proximal end of the body at a base thereof; and a knife sharpening cartridge having sharpening elements and being configured to be received into the knife sharpener receiving slot such that sharpening elements are in communication the knife receiving slot. 2 . The knife sheath of claim 1 , wherein the knife sharpener receiving slot further comprises an opening in each of the opposing sides of the body of the sheath, said opening being configured to receive and secure the knife sharpening cartridge within the open proximal end of the body. 3 . The knife sheath of claim 2 , wherein said opening comprises a post dividing the opening into a distal portion and a proximal portion. 4 . The knife sheath of claim 2 , wherein said opening comprises a post dividing the opening into a distal portion and a proximal portion, said knife sharpening cartridge further comprising opposing legs extending rearwardly from a front of the cartridge, said legs being configured to engage said post in each of the opposing walls of the body and lock the knife sharpening cartridge into an operable position within the slot. 5 . A knife sheath comprising: a knife receiving slot accessible from an open proximal end and being configured to receive and secure a knife; a knife sharpener receiving slot disposed within the open proximal end at a base thereof; and a knife sharpening cartridge having sharpening elements and being configured to be received into the knife sharpener receiving slot such that sharpening elements are in communication the knife receiving slot. 6 . The knife sheath according to claim 5 , further comprising a body having opposing sides, a closed distal end and the open proximal end. 7 . The knife sheath according to claim 5 , wherein the knife sharpener receiving slot further comprises a locking mechanism configured to receive and lock the knife sharpening cartridge into an operable position within the open proximal end of the sheath. 8 . The knife sheath according to claim 7 , wherein the locking mechanism comprises: an opening in each of opposing sides of a body of the sheath, said opening comprising a post dividing the opening into a distal portion and a proximal portion, said opening being configured to receive and secure the knife sharpening cartridge within the open proximal end of the body. 9 . The knife sheath of claim 8 , wherein said knife sharpening cartridge further comprises opposing legs extending rearwardly from a front of the cartridge, said legs being configured to engage said post in each of the opposing walls of the body and lock the knife sharpening cartridge into the operable position within the knife sharpener receiving slot.
