Compositions are disclosed that impart one or more durable hair styling benefits. The durable styling compositions comprise at least a first compound having anhydride, diacid, diester, or half-acid/half-ester functionality, and a second compound having at least one amine moiety or hydroxyl functional group. In one embodiment the durable styling composition takes the form of a leave-in product. The durable styling compositions are heat-activated, which may be accomplished through the use of a heated styling tool like a flat-iron, curling iron, and/or hair dryer. The benefits include shine, conditioning, softness, defrizzing, and improved hair alignment, and endure for up to 5 wash cycles or more without having to reapply the durable styling composition nor heat.

What we claim is: 1 - 18 . (canceled) 19 . A method of providing a durable hair style comprising the steps: (I) applying to the hair a composition comprising at least: (A) compound having at least one of diacid, diester, half-acid/half ester, or anhydride functionality, and wherein said compound (A) is poly(vinyl methyl ether-co-malei-co anhydride). (B) a compound having at least one amine moiety or hydroxyl group, wherein said compound (B) is polymide-1. and (II) heating the hair to a temperature ranging from about 90° C. to about 250° C. 20 . The method of claim 19 wherein said composition is left in the hair. 21 . The method according to claim 20 wherein said durable hair style exhibits at least greater shine, conditioning, defrizzing, decurling, dewaving, curling, waving, softness, ease of styling, volume improvement, dry combability, wet combability, smooth feeling, improved hair alignment, manageability, color protection, humidity resistance, or overall appearance compared to an equivalent method lacking said composition.
Compositions of homopolymers or copolymers of compounds having one or more unsaturated aliphatic radicals, each having only one carbon-to-carbon double bond, and at least one being terminated by a carboxyl radical, and containing at least one other carboxyl radical in the molecule, or of salts, anhydrides, esters, amides, imides or nitriles thereof; Compositions of derivatives of such polymers, e.g. poly (methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) · CPC title
