Disclosed herein are flame retardant materials, and in particular materials and processes for phosphorylating materials for flame retardant applications
Opening claim text (preview).
1 . A method for producing flame retardant additives, comprising phosphorylating a carbon-containing material to thereby produce a flame retardant additive. 2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising phosphorylating the carbon-containing material to increase char formation. 3 . The method of claim 2 , the carbon-containing material is lignin. 4 . The method of claim 2 , the carbon-containing material is tannin. 5 . The method of claim 2 , the starting material is tannic acid. 6 . The method of claim 2 , the carbon-containing material is oil. 7 . The method of claim 2 , the carbon-containing material is hydroxylated linseed oil. 8 . The method of claim 2 , the carbon-containing material is cottonseed oil. 9 . A phosphorylated product, prepared by a process comprising the step of phosphorylating a carbon-containing material. 10 . The method of claim 9 , the carbon-containing material is lignin. 11 . The method of claim 9 , the carbon-containing material is tannin. 12 . A flame retardant, comprising: phosphorous; and a carbon-containing compound, wherein the carbon-containing compound is phosphorylated to increase char formation. 13 . The flame retardant of claim 12 , wherein the carbon-containing compound comprises oil. 14 . The flame retardant of claim 12 , wherein the carbon-containing compound comprises tannin. 15 . The flame retardant of claim 12 , wherein the carbon-containing compound comprises lignin. 16 . The flame retardant of claim 15 , wherein the lignin is a phosphorylated lignin.
