The invention relates to moderately twisted polylobed extrudates having improved crush strength. The moderately twisted polylobed extrudates have an oblong shape and a cross section comprising a plurality of lobes, which lobes extend along and are twisted around a longitudinal axis of the extrudate and wherein the twist has a pitch from about 0.5 turns/inch (0.5 turns per 2.54 cm) to about 2 turns/inch (2 turns per 2.54 cm). Further the invention relates to a method for manufacturing such moderately twisted polylobed extrudates and their use as catalysts or adsorbents.

A twisted polylobed extrudate having an oblong shape and a cross section comprising a plurality of lobes, which lobes extend along and are twisted around a longitudinal axis of the extrudate and wherein the twisted lobes have a pitch from about 0.5 turns/inch (0.5 turns per 2.54 cm) to about 2 turns/inch (2 turns per 2.54 cm). 2 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the pitch is at least 0.5 turns/inch (0.5 turns per 2.54 cm) and less than about 2 turns/inch (2 turns per 2.54 cm). 3 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the pitch is at least 0.7 turns/inch (0.7 turns per 2.54 cm) and no more than 1.6 turns/inch (1.6 turns per 2.54 cm). 4 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein an extruded length of the extrudate is greater than about 2 inch (5.08 cm). 5 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the extrudate is from about 1/30 inch (0.8 mm) to about ⅛ inch (3.2 mm). 6 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the extrudate is from about 1/20 inch (1.3 mm) to about 1/16 inch (1.6 mm). 7 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the cross section comprises three lobes. 8 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the cross section comprises four lobes. 9 . The twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 , wherein the extrudate comprises at least one of a zeolite or a mesoporous material, a binder and, optionally, a promoter. 10 . A catalyst shaped as a twisted polylobed extrudate according to claim 1 . 11 . A method for manufacturing twisted polylobed extrudates comprising: a. mulling an extrusion mixture with a liquid to form a paste; b. adding the mulled extrusion mixture (paste) to an extruder, the extruder having a die plate comprising one or more dies, each die having a plurality of apertures; c. extruding the paste through the plurality of apertures to form twisted polylobed extrudates, wherein the apertures are configured to form extrudates having an oblong shape and a cross section comprising a plurality of lobes, which lobes extend along and are twisted around a longitudinal axis of the extrudate and wherein the twisted lobes have a pitch from about 0.5 turns/inch (0.5 turns per 2.54 cm) to about 2 turns/inch (2 turns per 2.54 cm). 12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the pitch is at least 0.5 turns/inch (0.5 turns per 2.54 cm) and less than about 2 turns/inch (2 turns per 2.54 cm). 13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the pitch is at least 0.7 turns/inch (0.7 turns per 2.54 cm) and no more than 1.6 turns/inch (1.6 turns per 2.54 cm). 14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a diameter of the apertures is from about 1/30 inch (0.8 mm) to about ⅛ inch (3.2 mm). 15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the twisted polylobed extrudates formed at step (c) have an extruded length greater than about 2 inch (5.08 cm). 16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the twisted polylobed extrudates comprise at least one of a zeolite or a mesoporous material, a binder and, optionally, a promoter. 17 . Use of the twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 as a catalyst. 18 . Use of the twisted polylobed extrudate of claim 1 as an adsorbent.
