Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Apparatus, system, and methods for utilizing one or more computing devices to stage the movement of teeth during an alignment treatment are disclosed. The computing device receives an electronic representation of the patient's teeth in their initial position and an electronic representation of the teeth a final position for each tooth. A route each tooth will travel to reach its final position is determined, and the teeth are scheduled to move according to a movement pattern. Moreover, the schedule of movement takes into account a maximum rate of tooth movement for each tooth, the path of movement for each tooth, the distance each tooth needs to move, any needed tooth staggering, any needed round-tripping or tooth movement slowing. The invention also includes techniques for determining an optimum number of stages for the treatment based on the schedule of movement.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A system for staging movement of a plurality of dental objects, the system comprising: one or more processors; and memory comprising program code that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive an electronic representation of each dental object of the plurality of dental objects, the electronic representation comprising a respective initial position and a respective corrected position for each dental object; measure a movement distance between the electronic representation of the initial position and the corrected position of at least one dental object of the plurality of dental objects; use the measured movement distance as a basis for selecting a movement pattern from a plurality of movement patterns for moving the plurality of dental objects towards their corrected positions; and modify the selected movement pattern by one or more of staggering or round-tripping at least one dental object of the plurality of dental objects so as to avoid collision or obstruction of the plurality of dental objects on their respective routes to their respective corrected positions. 2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modify step comprises staggering movement of at least two dental objects of the plurality of dental objects. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modify step comprises round-tripping at least two dental objects of the plurality of dental objects. 4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modify step comprises slowing movement of at least one dental object of the plurality of dental objects. 5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modify step comprises: attempting staggering of the at least one dental object; and if the staggering is unsuccessful in avoiding the collision or obstruction, attempting round-tripping of the at least one dental object. 6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the modify step comprises attempting to apply two or more of staggering, slowing, or round-tripping a dental object of the plurality of dental objects in a predetermined order. 7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein in the predetermined order, staggering is attempted prior to slowing, and slowing is attempted prior to round-tripping. 8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to determine that the selected movement pattern would result in a collision or obstruction of the plurality of dental objects on their respective routes to their respective corrected positions, and wherein the modify step is performed in response to the determination. 9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of movement patterns comprises at least two of the group consisting of an all-equal pattern, a V-shaped pattern, an A-shaped pattern, an M-shaped pattern, and a mid-line shift pattern. 10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the movement pattern is selected from the plurality of movement patterns based on whether the plurality of dental objects are gapped, crowded, or skewed. 11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the movement pattern defines an order of movement for the plurality of dental objects, and the modify step comprises modifying the order of movement. 12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code further causes the one or more processors to determine a route for each dental object of the plurality of dental objects to move to its respective final position. 13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the modify step comprises modifying the route for at least dental object of the plurality of dental objects. 14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code further causes the one or more processors to determine a distance for each dental object of the plurality of dental objects to move to its respective final position. 15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the modify step comprises modifying the distance for at least dental object of the plurality of dental objects. 16 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code further causes the one or more processors to determine a rate for each dental object to move to its respective final position. 17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the modify step comprises modifying the rate for at least dental object of the plurality of dental objects. 18 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code further causes the one or more processors to: determine a total distance for each respective dental object to move; divide the total distance for each dental object by its respective maximum distance per stage to determine a minimum number of movement stages for each dental object; determine a number of non-movement stages for each respective dental object; add the minimum number of movement stages to the number of non-movement stages for each dental object to determine a minimum number of stages for each respective dental object; and select the largest of the minimum number of stages as a total number of movement stages for moving the plurality of dental objects from their respective initial positions to their respective corrected positions. 19 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code further causes the one or more processors to generate data for manufacturing a plurality of orthodontic appliances for moving the plurality of dental objects according to the modified movement pattern. 20 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising program code that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive an electronic representation of each dental object of the plurality of dental objects, the electronic representation comprising a respective initial position and a respective corrected position for each dental object; measure a movement distance between the electronic representation of the initial position and the corrected position of at least one dental object of the plurality of dental objects; use the measured movement distance as a basis for selecting a movement pattern from a plurality of movement patterns for moving the plurality of dental objects towards their corrected positions; and modify the selected movement pattern by one or more of staggering or round-tripping at least one dental object of the plurality of dental objects so as to avoid collision or obstruction of the plurality of dental objects on their respective routes to their respective corrected positions.
